Actress Françoise Cadol has filed a lawsuit against Aspyr Media, alleging they used artificial intelligence to mimic her voice in the remastered versions of Tomb Raider 4-6. Cadol is recognized as the French voice actress for Lara Croft and lent her voice to the character in the games within the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered collection.
In the ’90s and early 2000s, the Tomb Raider game series was highly acclaimed. Fans were thrilled when Aspyr launched the remastered versions of Tomb Raider 1-3 in the previous year. This remaster was successful, leading to another release – Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered, which came out in February 2025. Unfortunately, the second trilogy received lower reviews compared to the first, earning an average critic score of 69 on OpenCritic, contrasting with a score of 75 for the original remaster.
French Actress Françoise Cadol Sues Aspyr Over AI Use in Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered
In my gaming world, I recently stumbled upon some shocking news – as reported by Le Parisian (via Game Developer), it’s been revealed that Francoise Cadol is taking legal action against Embracer-owned Aspyr Media and Crystal Dynamics for using AI to mimic her voice in the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered without her consent. The lawsuit demands they pull the game from the market until the issue is resolved, and they need to determine how many copies have been sold in order to compensate Francoise. In the lawsuit, her lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, stated that the AI replication of her voice comes off as a “robotic imitation” that lacks proper intonation or sounds poorly performed, but it still possesses Françoise’s distinctive timbre.
Cadol reported that following the update released by Aspyr on August 14, 2025, for Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered, she received concerns from fans about certain dialogue changes. Since then, the developers have issued several updates for the remastered version of these games.
Previously, Aspyr announced that they were planning to reinstate missing dialogue in the game “Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness,” which is the sixth installment in the series. The restored conversations were a significant selling point for the remastered trilogy, along with the visual and gameplay improvements.
Amidst ongoing debates, Crystal Dynamics is working on the upcoming installment in the Tomb Raider series. Recently, Crystal Dynamics faced a wave of job cuts, resulting in an unspecified number of studio employees being let go. It remains uncertain how these reductions will influence the new Tomb Raider game, as the developers have asserted that similar layoffs in the past did not affect the project’s development.
