Venturing into Borderlands 4 for the first time might feel like a daunting journey, especially for those unfamiliar with Kairos. Given that Borderlands 4 offers a multitude of activities, surpassing any prior game in the series, and boasts a brand-new open world, both seasoned fans and fresh players could benefit from some useful tips to kick things off. These handy hints for Borderlands 4 will uncover hidden aspects that the game doesn’t explicitly reveal, ensuring an enjoyable experience from beginning to end.
Read the Stats of Your Weapons and Gear
Players often grab a weapon purely because of its shimmering new rarity without even checking its performance in Borderlands 4. With countless weapons and gear items at their disposal, it’s crucial to inspect carefully before using what’s been acquired. Players should always review the stats they have access to, such as damage per second (DPS), the weapon’s element, firing modes, and weapon parts. Reading up on gear before picking it up will help you anticipate your next shot’s outcome, and this information could make or break a build.
Don’t Underestimate Ordnance and Action Skills
Cooldowns Are There For a Reason
Instead of grenades, you can now use heavy weapons like Light Machine Guns (LMGs), Rocket Launchers, Pulse Cannons, or extra grenades in battle. These powerful weapons are often underestimated and should be used as frequently as your main weapons. Remember, Ordnance weapons have a cool-down period because they can cause massive damage, so don’t hesitate to use them more often.
Your Action Skills also come with cool-downs and should be reserved for tough situations or when enemies are overwhelming you. Using both Action Skills and Ordnance Weapons together can help you stay victorious instead of becoming one of the casualties.
Movement Makes Combat More Engaging
Always on the Move
As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled about two fresh maneuvering techniques that’ll be featured in Borderlands 4: the grapple hook and the jetpack! The grapple hook lets me look skyward to find attachment points, which I can then use to propel myself forward and upward, building speed to dodge enemy fire. And let’s not forget the jetpack, enabling me to zip around both on the ground and in mid-air for an agile aerial attack that’ll leave enemies off-target as I evade their shots. In combat, it’s crucial to stay nimble to avoid getting hit, while maintaining adequate speed to ensure no one gets in my way. However, if you prefer to stick close to the ground with a weapon in hand, feel free to do so!
Use ECHO-4 to Find the Path Forward, and Unique Secrets
ECHO-4’s Location Scanner Helps Find the Way to Go, and Lost Loot
In the expansive open world of Borderlands 4, navigating directions might sometimes become chaotic. Though players have the option to call a vehicle anytime and use fast travel from the map, finding the right path isn’t always straightforward, as roads don’t cover every destination you may want to reach. To assist in this, simply press Z to bring up ECHO-4, who will help guide you by showing the optimal route on the minimap. Additionally, when summoned, ECHO-4 can highlight interactive elements such as grapple points or destructible environments that could potentially reveal hidden secrets and valuable loot.
Understand the Enemy Types and Their Weaknesses
The Three Enemy Health Types Are Weak to Certain Elements

In the game Borderlands 4, you’ll encounter three distinct types of enemy health: Flesh, Shield, and Armor. As you explore the world of Kairos, you’ll come across numerous foes to battle and plunder, but they can be categorized as follows:
1. Flesh enemies exhibit red health bars. They are vulnerable to Fire damage and resistant to Shock and Corrosive damage.
2. Shield enemies display blue health bars. These adversaries are weak against Shock damage and resistant to Fire and Corrosive damage.
3. Armor enemies possess yellow health bars. They are susceptible to Corrosive damage and resist Fire and Shock damage.
To maximize your effectiveness in combat, make sure to check the elemental type you’re using against the enemy you are fighting, as certain elements will be more effective than others. For a general rule of thumb: Shock is ideal for Shield enemies, Fire for Flesh enemies, and Corrosive for Armor enemies. However, some other elements can still deal significant damage to these foes.
Loot Junk and Sell it With Ease for Cash
An Easy Button Function Makes Selling Bad Gear All Too Easy
As a gamer diving into the world of Borderlands 4, I’m captivated by the endless piles of loot scattered everywhere – in chests, on corpses, and even from boss battles! The temptation to keep everything can be overwhelming sometimes, but fortunately, the game offers a clever solution. When you stumble upon an item on the ground that doesn’t appeal to you, simply hover over it with your cursor and press ‘Q’ to mark it as junk. This tag makes selling unwanted loot a breeze, as all you have to do is approach a vending machine, click ‘Q’, and watch as the useless gear gets sold off! This feature really simplifies the process of managing my inventory in this loot-filled adventure.
Upgrade Ammunition Capacity with SDU Tokens
Never Run Low on Ammo and Backpack Size with SDU Upgrades
As a dedicated player, you might find yourself starting off a bit lighter than usual, struggling with limited inventory space for ammunition and equipment. To address this issue, I’d highly recommend investing your first points in the SDU slots from the inventory menu as soon as possible. By using SDU Tokens, you can upgrade your Storage Deck, enhancing your ammo capacity for your favorite weapons and expanding your backpack and vault storage spaces.
To acquire these valuable tokens, immerse yourself in various activities scattered throughout the open world. This will ensure that you’re never caught short on ammo or burdened with unnecessary loot. Happy gaming!
Replay Missions and Boss Fights for Exclusive Loot
The Replay Function Has Great Rewards for Main Missions and Side Quests

As a seasoned gamer diving into Borderlands 4, I’ve got some good news for you! Unlike in previous games, there’s no need to wait until you’re a higher level to tackle side missions or main story missions just to scale up on weapons. In Borderlands 4, mission-specific gear is scarce, and what little there is, is completely randomized.
However, it’s important to mention that Borderlands 4 comes equipped with a replay function. From the comfort of the menu, you can choose to replay any side mission or main story mission, earning a slew of rewards listed in the mission tab before starting over. This feature is excellent for farming and trying to score superior loot drops, so don’t hesitate to jump into a mission if you feel underleveled-you can always give it another go later!
The same advice applies to boss fights. In Borderlands 4, you can farm legendary items from previously defeated bosses by heading to their arena and activating Moxxi’s Big Encore. This feature provides an excellent early-game farming method!
