I Recently Replayed Resident Evil Zero, and Now I Have 3 Issues I Need the Remake to Address

Just finished playing Resident Evil Zero after many years, and I’m eagerly anticipating the remake to tackle three key aspects that troubled me initially. Originally released exclusively on GameCube, Resident Evil Zero later appeared on Wii and other systems as an HD remaster. This updated version provided a revamped control layout and improved graphics, but essentially delivered the same gameplay experience as the original GameCube release.

When it comes to Resident Evil games, Resident Evil Zero is often considered one of the most debated due to some changes introduced that did not please many fans, and its storyline also raised questions about its impact on the main Resident Evil (RE) storyline, sparking controversy. With whispers of Capcom working on a remake for Resident Evil Zero, I found myself reflecting on the past and revisiting the game. After completing my playthrough, I found three aspects I feel need to be improved in the upcoming remake.

Resident Evil Zero Remake Needs to Bring Back the Item Box

In terms of gameplay, a remake of Resident Evil Zero is likely to follow the third-person, over-the-shoulder style seen in Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. However, there’s one significant aspect I hope they address – the removal of item boxes. While being able to discard unnecessary items was a handy feature in Resident Evil Zero, it also resulted in excessive backtracking which negatively impacted the gameplay experience. Ideally, a remake should retain the item disposal option but also reintroduce item boxes to provide players with the benefits of both features.

A Resident Evil Zero Remake Can Expand on Rebecca and Billy

In addition to my initial expectations for a remake of “Resident Evil Zero,” I have two story-related desires. It’s important to mention that the following discussion contains spoilers for “Resident Evil Zero.” As its title suggests, “Resident Evil Zero” serves as a prequel to the original “Resident Evil” game, providing insight into the experiences of the STARS Bravo Team prior to the mansion incident. However, this setup presents a problem with the character of Rebecca Chambers. Following the events of “Resident Evil Zero,” one would expect Rebecca to be aware that Umbrella Corporation is responsible for everything and adept at handling the numerous grotesque creatures within the mansion. Yet, in “Resident Evil 1,” Rebecca appears weak and somewhat clueless, which seems illogical. This inconsistency leaves room for improvement, and possibly addressing it might necessitate another remake of “Resident Evil 1.” If Capcom were to tackle this issue in a remake of “RE0,” it would be appreciated. Moreover, if they could also provide a reasonable explanation for why Rebecca lost all her weapons between the conclusion of “RE0” and the beginning of “RE1,” that would certainly enhance the overall narrative.

As a die-hard Resident Evil fan, here’s my two cents: I can’t help but feel that the story of Billy Coen was left unfinished. Sure, his tale seems to wrap up by the time Resident Evil Zero concludes, but he’s such an intriguing character. The upcoming remake of Resident Evil Zero presents a golden opportunity to delve deeper into Billy’s story. I’m eager to find out if ol’ Billy managed to escape from that haunting forest or if he met his end while trying to reach safety. It’s a mystery why we never hear about him again in the franchise, and it’s a real missed opportunity.

Trustworthy sources hint that Capcom is actively developing a remake of Resident Evil Zero, although an official announcement has yet to be made. While we are looking forward to the release of Resident Evil Requiem on February 27, it’s being whispered that the next two games in line are remakes of RE0 and Code: Veronica. If these rumors pan out, fans should not anticipate any announcements regarding the Resident Evil Zero remake until after Requiem has been launched.
