The highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2026! While fans are thrilled, the game will likely be released on a Game-Key card, which will require a significant amount of storage space on the console. Originally launched in 2020, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is now becoming available on multiple platforms, letting even more players enjoy this updated version of the beloved 1997 role-playing game.
The first installment of the popular *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* trilogy initially impressed players on PlayStation 4 with its beautiful visuals, epic music, and close adherence to the original game. A remastered version then arrived on PlayStation 5 and PC the following year. Now, series director Naoki Hamaguchi has officially announced that all three *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* games will be available on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on January 22, 2026, ending long-standing speculation. While fans are excited to play the first chapter featuring Cloud Strife, recent news has caused frustration among some players.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Switch 2 Port Will Be On a 90GB Game-Key Card
Eurogamer noticed that the box art for *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* on the official Square Enix store reveals it will be released as a Game-Key Card. While many expected this, the game’s listing on the Nintendo eShop shows it will need a large 90GB download – using up about a third of the new Switch 2 console’s storage. Game-Key Cards are still a big talking point among gamers, and some are worried about how this format might affect the long-term availability of games.

Square Enix announced in August that the Switch 2 version of *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* will run at 30 frames per second, which many fans found disappointing. This frustration comes after the Switch 2 demonstrated the ability to run *Cyberpunk 2077* at 40 FPS, even though *Cyberpunk 2077* has more demanding graphics and a large open world. It’s currently unknown if Square Enix plans to release an update after the game launches to improve performance.

Players who are excited about the story in *Final Fantasy 7 Remake* will have some new ways to play when it comes to the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix has announced a new optional feature called Streamlined Progression, which lets players choose a mode where they can’t take damage and always deal maximum damage, among other benefits.
