Borderlands 4 Feels So Much Like Destiny, It Put Me Ahead of the Game

It’s been clear since the detailed look at *Borderlands 4* in April that it shares a lot of similarities with Bungie’s *Destiny*. This isn’t a negative, though – *Destiny* has greatly influenced the shooter genre, and it makes sense for *Borderlands* to incorporate those elements. From the feel of the combat to the interconnected world and even the ability to instantly summon a vehicle, *Borderlands 4* feels like the *Destiny* crossover fans have been waiting for.

I’ve been playing the *Destiny* franchise since the first game came out in 2014, and I’m pretty sure I’ve sunk close to 5,000 hours into it across all the platforms. I know there are players out there with way more time in, but I play a ton of different games, so that’s a significant amount for me. Honestly, playing all those hours gives me a real edge with *Borderlands 4* – it feels so much like *Destiny* in a lot of ways, and I just *get* things that someone new to Bungie’s shooter might not.

Borderlands 4’s Destiny-Like Design Gives Me a Major Edge

I Knew This Was Coming

I wasn’t entirely surprised by what I experienced with *Borderlands 4*. I had a chance to play it at a preview event earlier this year, and it was obvious the game drew a lot of inspiration from *Destiny*. I also expected to find it a little more manageable than other players, even though it’s more challenging than past *Borderlands* games. The developers even encouraged me to try the hardest difficulties during the preview, confident I could succeed.

I took on challenges and enemies far beyond my character’s level (I was playing as Vex, and still am). It was incredibly difficult, but I persevered. We even got to fight one of the toughest bosses from the upcoming Borderlands 4 – the developers said it was their most challenging content yet. I was among the few players who managed to defeat it, and I did so repeatedly. I believe my success came from the experience I gained playing Destiny.

Borderlands 4 Echoes Destiny’s Core Feel

Borderlands 4 seems to be taking inspiration from Destiny, particularly with its new features like Digirunners, Echo-4, and the ability to glide. However, the biggest similarity lies in the combat itself. Like Destiny, Borderlands 4 really pushes you to keep moving during fights. When I started playing, I found my experience with Destiny helped me pick things up quickly, and it felt surprisingly familiar. Despite being quite different from previous Borderlands games, that sense of recognition is a good thing, especially considering how challenging the game can be.

What really makes *Borderlands 4* so enjoyable is how it fills the void left by recent issues with *Destiny 2*. Gearbox delivered exactly what I was hoping for. While it’s not trying to *be* *Destiny*, it definitely captures the same exciting, fast-paced energy that made *Destiny* one of my all-time favorite games. It’s great to experience that same thrilling gameplay in the *Borderlands* universe, a world I already love.
