As a long-time gamer and loyal PlayStation subscriber, I have to express my disappointment with the recent trend in the selection of games offered through the PS Plus Essential subscription. The last few months have seen a lackluster lineup that pales in comparison to what’s available on the Extra and Premium plans.
Each month, PS Plus members receive a selection of games to add to their library. The basic PS Plus Essential plan provides the least number of games, while PS Plus Extra and Premium offer a more extensive collection spanning current and past PlayStation console generations. Generally, the value of the service is evident, particularly with PS Plus Essential, as members can download these games permanently. However, recent months’ offerings for PS Plus Essential have been met with criticism due to an underwhelming choice of titles. Some examples include “Among Us,” which is freely available on mobile devices and inexpensively purchasable elsewhere.
Although the PS Plus Essential games offered in recent months have fallen short of expectations, the Extra and Premium collections have truly shone. The June 2024 lineup featured popular titles such as Monster Hunter Rise, Anno 1800, and Far Cry 4. Moreover, July’s Extra and Premium offerings have been announced, delivering another impressive selection of games to subscribers. Notable additions to the PS Plus Extra collection for July 2024 include Remnant 2 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. However, despite the value of June and July’s Extra and Premium titles, a concerning pattern emerges if August 2024’s Essential games don’t improve the situation.
PS Plus Is Showing Signs of Favoritism Toward Its Extra and Premium Subscribers
PS Plus’ Recent Essential Games Have Taken the Fall for Its Extra and Premium Titles
In recent times, it appears that PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) is leaning towards favoring its Extra and Premium members, while seemingly neglecting the needs of Essential subscribers. Despite the debates surrounding the value of Essential’s game selection, PS Plus has yet to acknowledge the issue of its meager offerings in comparison to the more expensive subscription tiers. To add insult to injury, Xbox Game Pass has been delivering a more consistent gaming experience, leading some disgruntled subscribers to consider jumping ship from PS Plus to Game Pass.
“The inclusion of Among Us into PS Plus Essential marks a contentious decision for the service, given that the least expensive PS Plus membership is pricier than the standard cost of the game. This situation raises concerns that Sony’s motivation might be purely financial, aiming to boost revenue by persuading subscribers to upgrade their plans, despite potential losses in the future.”
PS Plus’ Recent Extra and Premium Games Could Be a Sign of What’s to Come for the Service
If the lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus Essential in August 2024 resembles that of June and July, it may strongly indicate the direction in which the service is heading. From a commercial standpoint, offering less-attractive PS Plus Essential titles to encourage subscribers to upgrade to PS Plus Extra or Premium seems like a logical move. Ultimately, companies must take necessary actions to ensure profitability.
Simultaneously, this action, be it a business decision or not, has the potential to push away PlayStationPlus subscribers from the service. Yet, it remains uncertain if this trend will persist beyond July 2024. The anticipation is that the August lineup of PS Plus Essential games will make up for the disappointments of June and July. However, if this does not occur, PS Plus members might be compelled to upgrade their subscriptions in order to access more appealing titles.
