As a huge fan of the Metroid Prime series, I’m absolutely thrilled with the latest developments surrounding Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The recent insights from lead UI artist Jon Wofford have given us a glimpse into the meticulous attention to detail that Retro Studios is putting into this game.

Approximately weeks have passed since the unveiling of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and a developer from Retro Studios shared insights into the design process behind Samus’ visor UI and HUD for the upcoming Nintendo Switch title. Following almost five years of development restart in 2019, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond made its first appearance during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct. The game is projected to be released in 2025.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share my initial impressions of Metroid Prime 4. The latest sneak peek at this upcoming entry in the series reveals significant advancements made by Retro Studios over the past few years, noticeably surpassing earlier installments. For instance, Metroid Prime Remastered left us in awe with its stunning graphical enhancements, and Metroid Prime 4 maintains that level of shine and meticulous detail.

Wofford expressed his passion for the UI design of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on his ArtStation page, where he showcased some brief videos of the elements he developed. He expressed great joy in finally being able to unveil his work to the public. Detailed high-resolution screenshots of the HUD during combat were also shared, with the intention of modernizing the visor while staying faithful to the Metroid Prime series. Wofford was deeply moved by the opportunity to contribute to Metroid Prime 4 and shared that he gained valuable insights from his time at Retro Studios.

What Has Wofford Worked on for Metroid Prime 4?

As a passionate gamer, I can tell you that during the reveal trailer, Wofford didn’t just showcase the major aspects of the new Samus game. He also gave us a sneak peek into intricate details like scanning animations, transitions, and other small yet significant elements. In Morph Ball mode, he demonstrated the bomb counter and health meter at the top of the screen, adding to the immersive experience. Additionally, I’m thrilled to share that I had a hand in designing the UI for those computer screens we saw in the Space Pirate attack scene.

Jon Wofford previously served as the UI artist for “Metroid Prime Remastered” in 2023, and based on the current developments, “Metroid Prime 4” seems to build upon the UI design of its predecessor. The graphics of “Metroid Prime 4” have garnered significant acclaim from fans, with many noting their comparable quality to the remastered version. Although the game has not yet been released, there is widespread anticipation and enthusiasm among both fans and the development team for this highly-anticipated sequel.
