Resident Evil 2 Should Be For RE9 What Resident Evil 4 Was For RE Village

Highlights

  • Resident Evil 9 may blend elements from RE2 & Village, potentially offering an open-world experience.
  • Urban setting like RE2 could breathe new life into franchise, with urban exploration & survival gameplay.
  • Multiple campaigns like RE2 could enhance RE9, offering diverse experiences for both new & veteran fans.

As a huge fan of the Resident Evil series, I’m thrilled at the prospect of Resident Evil 9 (RE9) potentially taking inspiration from the classic Resident Evil 2 (RE2). The rumors of an open-world experience in RE9 have me excited, and if Capcom decides to blend elements from both RE2 and Village, we could be in for a truly unique and engaging experience.

As a huge fan of the Resident Evil series, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Resident Evil 9 (RE9). The game has been surrounded by an air of mystery and intrigue, particularly with rumors of an open-world setting. It will be fascinating to see how Capcom approaches RE9’s mechanics, setting, and camera perspective. With RE9 straddling the line between the third-person style of the remakes and the first-person shooter format of the newer entries, it may be wise for Capcom to draw inspiration from past titles like RE2. For instance, how Village took cues from RE4 could provide a valuable blueprint for RE9’s design. Ultimately, only time will tell what unique blend of elements RE9 will present to us fans.

The European settings of “Resident Evil Village” and “Resident Evil 4” may differ in specifics, yet their striking similarities are evident. Both games depict unfamiliar European locations marked by Gothic structures and outdated lifestyles. Notably, they prioritize expansive outdoor environments over the previous series’ confined corridors and dimly lit interiors. Gameplay-wise, both “Village” and “RE4” align with the ‘action-survival-horror’ category within the “Resident Evil” genre. Moreover, they are the only titles in the series to incorporate in-game merchants. In essence, “Resident Evil Village” was significantly influenced by “RE4,” and it would be fitting to acknowledge the same debt to “RE2.”

Resident Evil 2 Would Be a Great Launching Pad for Resident Evil 9

Village Tackled the Countryside, Now Resident Evil 9 Can Get Back to Civilization

As a huge fan of the Resident Evil series, I can understand why Village might draw inspiration from RE4, given its widespread acclaim. However, let’s not forget that RE2 holds a special place in many fans’ hearts, often ranked among the best Resident Evil games. Consequently, it’s reasonable to assume that RE9 will borrow some elements from RE2, particularly in terms of its setting.

As a dedicated fan of the Resident Evil series, I’ve been pondering what direction the franchise could take next. With RE7, Village, and the RE4 Remake setting the scene in secluded locations, I believe introducing Resident Evil 9 in an urban environment could reinvigorate the series. This could be reminiscent of the RPD or orphanage from Resident Evil 2, providing a fresh perspective for players to delve into modern settings.

Learning from Resident Evil 2 Could Mean the Return of Multiple Campaigns

In the classic game “Resident Evil 2,” there are multiple storylines, with two primary ones, referred to as “scenarios” in the original 1998 version. Players have the option to select between playing as Claire or Leon, each experiencing unique journeys with varied weapons, companions, and environments. These campaigns run concurrently yet diverge significantly, eventually intersecting at the conclusion. To unlock the true ending of “Resident Evil 2,” players must finish both main campaigns. The alternate scenarios are available for completion as well, providing minor variations from the primary storylines.

Aside from setting, this would be another great note that Resident Evil 9 could take from Resident Evil 2. Multiple playable characters is a staple of the Resident Evil franchise, but most entries limit these alternate characters to specific chapters, like Mia’s flashback/video recording sequence in Resident Evil 7. In Resident Evil 2, Claire and Leon felt like equals in many ways, as they each had dedicated stories to play through, which makes the game more compelling as a whole. If Resident Evil 9 could do something like this, especially if it brings back classic Resident Evil characters, it would be a great homage to RE2 and a sensible choice in its own right.
