Things I Hope Happen In Danganronpa 2×2’s Alternate Storyline

The recent Nintendo Direct revealed a trailer for Danganronpa 2×2, which surprised many fans. Following the release of the anniversary collection, another rerelease wasn’t expected. But 2×2 isn’t just an updated version of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair; the trailer promises a completely new story triggered by a single event. This will include new characters as both killers and victims, and a fresh set of twists and turns.

Ever since the trailer dropped, everyone’s been buzzing about what’s going to happen in the new story! We’re all wondering if our favorite characters will avoid their awful fates, and if anyone we *least* expect will turn out to be a killer. Honestly, what I love most about *Danganronpa* is how crazy, endearing, and surprisingly complex all the characters are. So, I’ve been thinking about how this new storyline could really help us get to know these sixteen students even better.

There’s No Despair Disease

A Lackluster Motive

Fans have often been let down by the “Despair Disease” storyline in *Danganronpa 2*. While it connects to the lost memories of the students, Mikan’s sudden change in character feels forced and diminishes both her development and the impact of the deaths in this part of the game. The case itself is more confusing than compelling, and doesn’t offer much insight into what makes the characters tick or how they relate to each other.

Because the upcoming game, *2×2*, will feature entirely new murder cases, we can expect Monokuma’s motives to also be different. It’s likely that cases like the Funhouse and Twilight Syndrome Murder Case won’t return. I’m particularly hoping the ‘Despair Disease’ is replaced with a more realistic motive. The strongest *Danganronpa* cases are usually fueled by emotions like fear, revenge, anger, or desperation. Removing the Despair Disease from Mikan’s story could allow for a more thorough exploration of her character.

Fuyuhiko Never Has His Turning Point

A Character Arc Gets Cut Short

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, the Ultimate Yakuza, experienced significant character growth in *Danganronpa 2*. Events like Mahiru’s death, discovering the truth about his sister, and the loss of Peko forced him to shed his cold exterior and become a devoted friend. However, the story could have unfolded very differently. *2×2* offers a chance to explore alternative paths for this complex character and how he might have developed under different circumstances.

One interesting idea is to have Fuyuhiko be the one who gets killed. While making him the killer feels a bit predictable, given his connection to the yakuza and his initial behavior, it’s easy to imagine someone losing their patience with him. He could unintentionally provoke someone to the point where they commit murder, meaning he’d die before his character really develops.

Fuyuhiko’s death could create some compelling storylines for Peko. It would be fascinating to see if their relationship is brought to light during the trial, and how these events change her as a character. Peko’s entire life has been dedicated to serving Fuyuhiko, so it would be interesting to explore how she copes with losing that purpose.

Mahiru Commits Murder

A Defender To The Death

Mahiru Koizumi, a talented photographer, quickly becomes a strong presence in the group. She consistently intervenes to stop disagreements, offer solutions, and maintain unity. She’s very protective, particularly of the female students, and isn’t afraid to confront inappropriate behavior from others, like Teruteru’s comments or Fuyuhiko’s intimidation. This assertive personality, however, could also make her a suspect in the game’s darker storyline.

A murder motivated by protecting someone else hasn’t happened yet in a *Danganronpa* story, and Mahiru would be a great character to explore that theme with. Given her developing relationship with Hiyoko, Hiyoko feels like the most impactful person Mahiru could kill to protect. The trial that would follow would be incredibly compelling – would Mahiru admit what she did, or try to claim innocence? And would Hiyoko potentially take the blame, hoping to save Mahiru? This scenario could offer a fresh perspective on the game’s second case, particularly if Fuyuhiko were the victim.

Hiyoko Makes A Change

A Full Character Arc

From the start, Hiyoko is portrayed as unkind and a bully, often targeting Mikan and others. However, after Mahiru’s death, she begins to try and improve her behavior. She holds back her harsh words and even attempts to forgive Fuyuhiko, who is also working on becoming a better person after Peko’s death. Sadly, Hiyoko doesn’t get the chance to fully go through with this transformation, as she becomes a victim in the third case.

Mahiru’s gentle nature really affected Hiyoko. If Mahiru were to make a huge sacrifice for Hiyoko, even something extreme like killing to protect her, it could change Hiyoko deeply. The game hints that Hiyoko had a difficult childhood filled with pressure, and that she struggles to be kind herself because she rarely experienced it. It would be great to see Hiyoko genuinely grow and become a more complex and relatable character, while still keeping her playful, somewhat rude attitude.

Chiaki Is Murdered

A Different Path To Revealing Her Identity

Even though Chiaki is an AI, it’s possible for her to be ‘killed’ inside the Neo World Program. If this happened, it could reveal some surprising things – like if she’s secretly working against the Future Foundation, or even that she’s actually a computer program.

Fans have noticed that Chiaki’s execution doesn’t show a body or any blood. This suggests the mystery surrounding her death might focus on unusual details or inconsistencies – perhaps a lack of blood even though she was attacked, or strange errors appearing in the system as a result. It seems her death isn’t straightforward.

Okay, so here’s a crazy thought: what if the killer found out Chiaki was actually an AI? They might go after her *because* of that, maybe even try to mess with her code and basically ‘kill’ her digitally – it’d be a super weird death with no clear explanation. Investigating that would be seriously mind-bending, and it would make us all question everything about Jabberwock Island. But if this *does* happen, it should be the final murder case. It would put whoever’s left right on the edge of finally figuring out the whole mystery.

Twogami’s Identity Is Revealed While He Is Alive

An Unexplored Plot Point With Potential For Conflict

When players first experience Danganronpa 2, they’re often confused by the appearance of Byakuya Togami, a character who survived the first game. While he looks different, it seems like the same person-until the game reveals that the Byakuya on the island is actually the Ultimate Impostor, pretending to be him. Fans call this character “Twogami,” and he’s killed by Teruteru (who meant to target Nagito) before his true identity is exposed in Chapter 5, well after his death.

Things will likely shift with the next update. Not only will Twogami have more time to survive, but he’ll also interact with the group earlier on. Monokuma excels at creating mistrust and suspicion, which often leads to conflict. If the story starts to lag, revealing Twogami’s secret identity as the Ultimate Impostor could be a strong turning point. He doesn’t necessarily have to expose himself directly; he could subtly guide someone to discover the profiles of the Hope’s Peak Academy students. This would force Twogami to justify his actions and deceptions, potentially revealing more about his true character.
