Subnautica 2 Reveals New Kind of Leviathan

Okay, so I just saw the news about Subnautica 2 and they’ve teased this new Leviathan called the Collector. Apparently, it’s absolutely massive – a real deep-sea monster! Honestly, it’s already making me nervous just thinking about how much more terrifying exploring the ocean is going to be in the sequel. This thing looks like a serious threat!

In the world of Subnautica, Leviathans are enormous creatures living underwater, and come in many different species-some are even as big as skyscrapers! While not all Leviathans are hunters, many of them actively prey on other lifeforms within the game’s story. The next installment, Subnautica 2, promises to feature both familiar and brand new Leviathans.

Subnautica 2 Reveals Terrifying Cthulhu-Inspired Leviathan

Unknown Worlds Entertainment recently showcased a new creature for the upcoming Subnautica game in a developer update. Cory Strader, a veteran art director from the first two Subnautica games, is leading the visual design for this third installment. The new Leviathan, named the Collector, is a massive, squid-like creature inspired by Cthulhu. Strader explained that the design team wanted to create a predator that feels unique compared to creatures from earlier games.

The team’s design process started with simple shapes and evolved into a detailed creature featuring four long tentacles and a glowing, two-part body. This design aims to be both startling and clearly visible from a distance. A recent developer update also explained the game’s “classic AI” system, which uses Unreal Engine’s behavior trees. Although the developers didn’t share many technical details, a previous leak indicated that *Subnautica 2* is being built with Unreal Engine 5.5.4.

Subnautica 2 Leviathans and Other Creatures Will Be Much More Reactive

The Collector is a creature that gets easily annoyed and doesn’t like unfamiliar things, so it won’t be friendly to the player. However, it can be distracted by other creatures or bright lights like flares. The developers at Unknown Worlds designed all the creatures in *Subnautica 2* to be more responsive than in previous games. They’re using a new “stimulus” system that allows creatures to constantly assess their surroundings, leading to more dynamic gameplay and making each playthrough unique.

Following a troubled delay in July 2025, Subnautica 2 is currently aiming for an early access release in 2026. The delay led to the removal of Unknown Worlds’ co-founders, as Krafton, the parent company, felt the game wasn’t ready for launch and claimed the founders had neglected their duties. The founders responded with a lawsuit, arguing Krafton removed them to avoid paying a $250 million bonus tied to meeting development goals established when Krafton acquired the studio in 2021.
