In Shape of Dreams, you can unlock eight different characters, each with unique strengths. Like many roguelike games with character unlocks, it takes time and effort to collect them all.
This guide details all the characters you can get in *Shape of Dreams* at the game’s release. We’ve also added helpful tips to show you how to unlock each Traveler if you’re having trouble.
How to Get All Travelers in Shape of Dreams
Character | How to Unlock |
---|---|
Lacerta | Starting character |
Mist | Starting character |
Yubar | Collect a total of 600 Dream Dust |
Vesper | Reach the Starry Dream |
Aurena | Heal yourself of allies worth 25,000 Health |
Bismuth | Keep a Traverler’s movement speed above 900 for 3 seconds. |
Nachia | Defeat the Demon of the Forest 20 times. |
Shell | Breathe life into the wooden doll. |
In *Shape of Dreams*, every character offers a completely different way to play. Not only does each one have a unique style, but they also come with their own special constellations, making each character feel distinct in both gameplay and how you build them.
Unlocking some characters is simple, but others take more work. Here’s a guide to getting each one.
How to Get Yubar in Shape of Dreams
Yubar is probably the simplest character to unlock in *Shape of Dreams*. You just need to collect 600 Dream Dust – the blue currency you earn by destroying crystals or breaking down Memories and Essences. Basically, just play the game, and you’ll unlock him over time.
How to Get Vesper in Shape of Dreams
Vesper is just as easy to unlock as Yubar, but requires a little luck. You simply need to reach the Starry Sky biome, which is one of the possible areas you’ll encounter starting in the third stage of a run. Like Yubar, unlocking Vesper is simply a matter of playing the game. He’s likely to be the first character many players unlock, and his natural durability makes him a great choice for beginners playing the *Shape of Dreams* campaign.
How to Get Aurena in Shape of Dreams
Okay, so getting Aurena is all about healing – you need to restore a total of 25,000 health, either to yourself or your teammates. Honestly, the best way to do this is by playing as Vesper! He’s got a passive ability that heals him automatically, which is super helpful. But even with Vesper, 25,000 is a *lot* of healing, so be prepared to put in some serious playtime to unlock her!
Because Vesper can heal herself automatically, you don’t *need* to use healing shrines or collect Memories and Essences to unlock Aurena. However, using those resources will still help you unlock her faster.
How to Get Nachia in Shape of Dreams
To unlock Nachia, you’ll need to defeat Belphomet, the boss of the first area, twenty times. The fastest way to do this is to beat him and then immediately return to the main menu. Make sure to collect the Stardust he drops each time!
A great way to make progress is by playing with Mist. She has a challenge where you need to defeat Belphomet quickly – within two minutes of starting a run. To help with this and unlock Nachia, use the Burning Bloodlust Constellation. It gives you a significant damage boost (16 Attack Damage) until you reach the second stage. Combining this with other constellations that increase attack damage, along with the Fleche and Parry skills, will be very effective.
In *Shape of Dreams*, constellations are a special way to progress, and you unlock them using Stardust from the character menu.
How to Get Bismuth in Shape of Dreams
Now, here’s the challenging part. Obtaining Bismuth requires reaching a Movement Speed of 900 and holding it for at least three seconds. While there are several methods to achieve this, we specifically used two Memories in our approach.
- Immolation: Ignite yourself, consuming 12% of your max health over 3.5 seconds. While burning, your movement speed increases, and you deal damage per second to nearby enemies.
- Corrosive Trail: Leave a trail of gas behind you as you move for the next four seconds. This increases your movement speed, and the gas poisons enemies.
Reach level 3 in either of these skills, and then use both at the same time. This will unlock Bismuth before the skills run out. Or, you can try this other method:
- Essence of Sulfur: Memory damage is converted to Fire damage, and you deal more Fire damage over time.
- Essence of Quicksilver: Gain movement speed when you deal Fire damage or cast the Memory this Essence is attached to.
To make Quicksilver perform better, try getting multiple copies of it or using Chaos blessings. Then, choose a character who can use abilities frequently, either because they have short cooldowns or rely on charges, such as Aurena or Mist with Fleche. Mist’s Light as a Feather Constellation can significantly boost your movement speed-by 12% or even 18% if you’re at full health-but you might need to level up Mist to unlock it.
How to Unlock Shell in Shape of Dreams
Shell is the hardest character to unlock. You need to locate three tiny souls and place them into a wooden doll. The instructions for unlocking him aren’t very clear, and the process relies heavily on luck. Plus, you only get one chance during each playthrough to do it correctly.
To begin, you’ll need to find the Whispering Lotus Plateau. This Japanese-themed area, featuring floating swords and skilled warriors, appears as one of the possible locations in the third stage. Once you’re there, your next goal is to locate three hidden souls spread throughout the entire stage.
Whenever you’re about to enter a new area, move your mouse over the map marker. If it shows a small soul, go there right away. Beat the enemies in that area, then find and collect the red soul that’s floating around. Do this three times in total to collect all of them.
Once you’ve gathered all three souls, make your way to the stage’s boss arena. Before climbing the steps to the arena, look to your left – you should find Shell’s body there. Interacting with it will permanently unlock Shell as a playable character.
To get Shell, you have to collect all three souls in one playthrough. Also, be careful not to enter areas controlled by Hunters repeatedly, or you’ll quickly be overrun.
