Foundry update changes the screen panels user interface

As a dedicated Foundry gamer with hundreds of hours under my belt, I can’t help but feel elated by Channel 3 Entertainment’s latest quality of life update. This seemingly small adjustment to the screen panel user interface is a game-changer for those of us who spend countless hours building and managing our intricate factories.

Channel 3 Entertainment recently rolled out a minor yet noteworthy improvement for Foundry, altering the look of the screen panel user interface.

When playing Foundry extensively, you may encounter instances where attempting to read the screen panel for a machine is disrupted by something else, be it your field of view or an earlier-placed conveyor loader. With this update, the developer introduces a new UI space panel featuring significantly larger and more legible text.

In the Steam blog post about the update, it’s mentioned that although significant efforts have been made to improve the loading times and scalability of world space interfaces, they can be challenging to read and use in densely populated settings or on smaller screens like the Steam Deck. An additional issue is that a friendly loading screen sometimes prevents users from getting close enough to interact with the panels.

The answer originated from Discord and is explained thusly: Pressing the “interact” key (E) while observing a screen panel will bring up a user interface overlay. This interface remains stationary in the middle of your screen, allowing you to continue interacting with other UI elements on the display.

The revamped UI space panel boasts larger, clearer text for easier reading. Your mouse cursor starts at the center of the screen every time, ensuring a uniform layout and size for all panels. This consistency in placement and sizing simplifies configuration adjustments across different panels. Additionally, there’s an option to lock the camera rotation to minimize nausea for users who are susceptible.

Currently, you need to access the interaction panel specifically to engage with certain buildings, as some structures may have more than one panel. However, we’re considering streamlining the process so that interacting with a larger building would allow you to engage its associated panels more casually. We aren’t sure if the benefit of directly engaging the panel outweighs the potential loss in ease-of-use. I’m excited to hear your opinions on how best to implement this feature.

The team concludes their update by expressing gratitude for the multitude of suggestions they’ve received on enhancing Foundry’s minute-by-minute experience. However, they remain open to receiving even more ideas. What feature do you think would significantly improve or change your experience with Foundry? Feel free to share your thoughts on our Discord channel.

Foundry is out now for PC via Steam early access.
