Highlights

  • Melinoe takes players on a unique journey through the Underworld in Hades 2, rescuing the House of Hades from her grandfather, Chronos.

  • The surface realm in Hades 2 features a cooler, blue-filtered aesthetic compared to the red-orange hues of the deeper Underworld levels.

As a seasoned gamer with hundreds of hours clocked into roguelike games, I’ve grown quite fond of the intricacies and challenges that Hades brought to the table. But when I heard about Hades 2 and Melinoe’s journey through the Underworld, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with trepidation.

In “Hades 2,” the sequel to its predecessor, the core remains the same but it aims to offer novelty in key aspects. A major shift is the introduction of Melinoe, who assumes the role of the protagonist and playable character. For most of their experience during the game’s early access phase, players will accompany Melinoe on numerous journeys through the Underworld, with the objective of saving the House of Hades from Chronos, her domineering grandfather and Titan of Time. However, it’s not just the Underworld that players will traverse as they currently have access to the surface as well, allowing them to commence their climb towards Mount Olympus.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Melinoe’s journey into the Underworld in Hades 2 is a complete contrast to her journey up to Mount Olympus on the surface. This isn’t just because Hades 2 is still in early access. The distinct structures and atmospheres of each realm add to this difference, providing players with two incredibly unique experiences.

How Melinoe’s Descent Into the Underworld Compares to Her Ascent on the Surface in Hades 2

Melinoe’s Descent Into the Underworld Is More Like Traditional Hades Than Her Ascent on the Surface

In the game “Hades 2,” Melinoe’s journey to the Underworld stands out distinctly from her earlier ascent to Mount Olympus due to its closer resemblance to the conventional Hades experience. Similar to Zagreus, Melinoe navigates through various rooms in the Underworld of “Hades 2,” facing hordes of enemies and encountering mini-bosses and main bosses at the conclusion of each major zone. The principal deviation from the typical Hades layout is the Mourning Fields zone, which features expansive open areas rather than the enclosed rooms that characterize traditional Hades.

As a gamer, I find myself in the midst of an intriguing journey with Melinoe as we venture towards Mount Olympus. However, my adventure is far from complete. After conquering the Rift of Thessaly and defeating Eris in Hades 2, I’m met with a gentle reminder from Supergiant Games: “to be continued.” This doesn’t deter me, though, as I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead on the surface.

Melinoe’s Ascent on the Surface Differs Visually From Her Descent Into the Underworld

The visual styles of Melinoe’s journey to the Underworld and her return to the surface differ noticeably. While the surface realm in the game is predominantly blue-tinted, giving everything a cooler look, the descent into the Underworld starts with spaces that resemble the surface but gradually takes on a warmer red-orange filter as Melinoe goes deeper underground.

As a fan of the game, I can tell you that the Underworld in Hades 2 retains a striking resemblance to its counterpart in Hades. It’s filled with otherworldly structures and labyrinthine pathways that take your breath away. But when it comes to the surface realm, things start feeling more familiar. Here, you’ll find houses, markets, and other surface-level infrastructure that brings a sense of relatability to this fantastical world.

In the upcoming “Hades 2” by Supergiant, Melinoe’s journey may undergo significant transformation as the surface realm grows. Exact changes are uncertain, but it’s clear that Melinoe will face her toughest trials yet.
