Best Items To Upgrade Early in Dying Light: The Beast

In the open-world game *Dying Light: The Beast*, surviving means being at your best – even a small error can be fatal, as even the slowest zombies won’t let mistakes slide. To succeed against the undead in Castor Woods, players need to find powerful Items and then work hard to upgrade them to their highest potential.

This guide will show players how to prioritize upgrading their gear in *Dying Light: The Beast*. It will help you choose the most important items to focus on early and mid-game, and save resources for things like weapon modifications. Here’s a list of the best items to upgrade first.

Bandage

Improving your Bandage – your primary way to heal in *Dying Light: The Beast* – should be your top priority. You’ll need Manual Pages to upgrade it, and you can find these fairly early on by exploring Dark Zones. However, the best Manual Pages (Epic and Legendary) take longer to find, so you can focus on collecting other useful items while you search.

Once players have the ability, they should upgrade Kyle’s equipment to Epic quality first. Then, wait until later in the main storyline before upgrading it again to Legendary. Throughout the game, always make sure to prioritize upgrading Bandages over any other items – they’re essential for Kyle’s survival, and running out of them in a fight means certain defeat.

UV Flashlight

After getting some basic gear, players should focus on upgrading the UV Flashlight. Improving it to Rare and then Epic quality will let you use it for longer and quickly fend off groups of Infected. Keep in mind that while upgrades increase how long the flashlight works, they also make it take longer to recharge.

Always keep this Gadget handy! It has two main uses: first, it lets you briefly stun zombies when your stamina is low, giving you time to recover. Second, it can slow down faster, more dangerous zombies like Volatiles and Virals, preventing them from quickly overwhelming you.

Hunting Bow

As soon as you start playing, you can grab the blueprint for the Hunting Bow – it’s right on top of the first Workbench you unlock! It actually starts as a Rare quality item, which is pretty cool. Honestly, I wouldn’t focus on it *too* much right away. I’d suggest getting it upgraded later once you’ve collected a bunch of those Intermediate Manual Pages. It’s definitely worth upgrading, but not your top priority at the beginning.

Players can significantly improve their ranged weapons, especially for stealth, by unlocking different arrow types and upgrading their Hunting Bow as they gain levels. A great way to get Fire Arrows is by clearing the Gas Station Voltage Pole Safe Spot, which is northeast of the Power Plant. To maximize the bow’s potential – once it reaches Epic quality – players will need to gather materials like Rags, Wire, Feathers, Leather, and Scraps, along with an Intermediate Manual Page, to boost its damage, speed, and range.

Throwing Knives

After focusing on other upgrades, players should prioritize improving their Throwing Knives. Upgrade them to Rare quality, and then as quickly as possible, to Epic quality. Throwing Knives are versatile – useful for attacking, defending, and silent takedowns – but they break after each use, meaning you’ll need a lot of them. Higher quality knives deal more damage and have a stronger knockback effect on human enemies, making the upgrade worthwhile.

Players can use gadgets to quickly defend against zombie attacks, instead of mashing the action button. One click of the Gadget Button instantly defeats any Biters attempting to attack Kyle. Approaching an enemy from behind and using a Throwing Knife with the Gadget Button also allows for a faster takedown. It’s best to upgrade this Gadget early in the game.

Molotov

Seriously, don’t sleep on the Molotovs! I’m making them a top priority upgrade because they’re *amazing* against zombies. You throw one, and boom – everything’s on fire! It’s a super quick way to wipe out huge groups. And the better the Molotov, the longer and more damage the flames do. Trust me, they’re a lifesaver!

Players should get the Epic Grade Molotov Cocktail as quickly as possible – it significantly improves how well you can manage large groups of enemies. A carefully thrown fire curtain can even help you survive a whole wave of Biters, though Virals and Volatiles will still be dangerous even while on fire. Just be aware that burning enemies can also set *you* on fire, so watch out for that!

Hand Grenade

Okay, so the Hand Grenade is seriously powerful, but it takes some practice to get right. A standard one does about 700 damage in a pretty small area, sending out deadly shrapnel and just wrecking everything nearby. But here’s the cool part – as you upgrade it, the damage gets even *higher*, and the explosion gets way bigger! You can eventually get the blast radius up to around 4 meters, which is massive. It’s definitely a gadget you want to learn if you want to really dominate.

If you’re looking for a way to take down enemies more easily without getting the Grenade Launcher yet, this upgrade is a great choice. It’s really helpful against many of the tougher creatures in the main game, making it well worth the resources you spend on it. This throwing weapon is particularly effective against three specific types of enemies:

  • Large groups of mixed Biters led by Armored Biters, can be cleared quickly by throwing a grenade.
  • Slow Infected, like Goons and Demolishers, are also affected by the explosive Power of grenades.
  • Human enemies using ranged weapons and taking cover behind cars (or other structures) will be helpless when a grenade lands at their feet.

Reinforcement Mod

While exploring Castor Woods, players will find a weapon upgrade called Reinforcement. This upgrade can be added to melee weapons to make them more durable, initially increasing durability by 35. Like other upgrades, Reinforcement can be improved to higher levels, boosting its benefits. When upgraded, the durability increase from Reinforcement jumps to 55.

Players can find the Reinforcement Mod at the Factory Relay Substation, which is north of Recreation Island. If you’re in that area, it’s worth checking out! This mod will help you manage the frustrating weapon-breaking feature until you unlock the Efficient Fighting Skill.

Endurance Booster

The Endurance Booster is a valuable consumable item in *Dying Light: The Beast*, crafted from rare ingredients. It’s a really useful addition to a player’s inventory because it increases your maximum stamina. Starting with a 15% boost at its basic form, upgrading it to higher qualities like Rare, Epic, and Legendary can increase your stamina by up to 30%. This is a significant benefit, as there aren’t many ways to increase maximum stamina in the game.

While it’s currently not a top priority because some ingredients are hard to find, we need to upgrade this item to the highest quality as soon as we can. This will ensure we get the most out of every material and create valuable supplies. This item is vital for when players get lost in the forest as night approaches. They’ll need to sprint to safety, which drains stamina while avoiding dangerous enemies. A better version of the Endurance Booster could be the key to survival.
