Tips & Tricks for Dying Light: The Beast

In *Dying Light: The Beast*, you’ll once again play as Kyle Crane, but this time he’s older and deeply troubled. To survive in this dangerous, post-apocalyptic world filled with terrifying infected and ruled by the ruthless Baron and his soldiers, you’ll need to learn the map, understand your enemies, and pick up some helpful strategies.

This guide provides everything players need to know before exploring Castor Woods. These beginner tips will help you succeed, even on harder difficulty levels. You’ll learn how to move stealthily and effectively boost your strength.

How To Stay Alive in Dying Light: The Beast

Surviving in *Dying Light: The Beast* is more challenging than you’d expect. You’ll face relentless Biters that attack in large groups, and fast, noise-sensitive Virals. Both will make your life difficult if you let them. Death carries a penalty – you’ll lose experience points each time your character, Kyle, falls. Therefore, staying alive means mastering distance: judging every attack, camera angle, and parkour move. You need to stay focused and avoid the zombies’ reach at all times. While there are some escape moves if you *do* get grabbed (we’ll cover those later), getting caught repeatedly will quickly overwhelm you with Biters and other infected.

To avoid getting caught by zombies, it’s best to use ranged weapons like Throwing Knives and Bows, or sneak attacks when possible. This is especially helpful for dealing with enemies like Screamers, Toads, and Gas Tanks before they can explode and attract more zombies. Understanding different weapon types is also important. Short, one-handed blades are great for stealth attacks from behind, while one-handed blunt weapons are best for precise, head-on hits. For larger groups of zombies, especially tougher ones, use two-handed hammers. And to quickly clear out swarms of weaker Biters, two-handed blades like the Scythe are ideal. The key is to choose the right weapon to keep a safe distance between you and the infected, maximizing your reach and effectiveness.

How To Survive The Night in Castor Woods

The day-night cycle is central to the *Dying Light* games, and *Dying Light: The Beast* really emphasizes this with its vast, sprawling environments in Castor Woods. While there are a few key urban areas like the Asylum and Power Plant, much of the map consists of open forests, tall grass, and water. This means getting caught in the wilderness when night falls can be incredibly dangerous. Volatiles and Virals are everywhere, leaving players with almost nowhere to hide safely except under the UV lights of distant shelters. Stealth and finding good hiding spots are crucial for survival.

The infected are now much better at finding you, tracking even the smallest sounds and lights. To survive the night, you need to stay hidden – turn off your flashlight, move stealthily, and find good cover like tall grass, behind obstacles, or even underwater. Creating distance between you and the infected is key. When night falls, it’s crucial to locate and mark the nearest Shelter on your map, as this will help you survive if the nocturnal infected spot you and give chase. Use parkour to boost your movement speed and avoid being caught. If a Volatile attacks head-on, slide to dodge. Use a Stomp Jump to evade Virals. And if you’re blocked by a swarm in a tight space, wall running is your best escape route.

Learn All About Kyle’s Skills & The Beast Mode

If you’re familiar with previous *Dying Light* games, especially the original and *The Following*, you’ll remember how important parkour is for avoiding zombies and escaping fast, dangerous enemies like Virals and Volatiles. New players might need some time to get the hang of it. The main character starts with advanced skills from those earlier games, including the ability to slide under obstacles and perform a powerful jump when climbing ledges. You can find a complete list of these starting skills in the “Prior Skillset” section of the Skill menu.

Alongside his core abilities, Kyle learns new skills each time he levels up. These include crucial survival techniques like Active Landing, as well as dropkicks and other skills from combat, stealth, and parkour. Players will also discover Beast Mode, which activates when Kyle builds up rage by dodging attacks, hitting enemies, or taking damage. When Beast Mode is active, Kyle becomes nearly invincible and powerfully overwhelms his opponents. He gains increased attack power, the ability to perform finishing moves on even the toughest enemies (like Volatiles), rapid health regeneration, enhanced speed and jump height, and other abilities unlocked by injecting a special compound found in boss enemies (Chimeras). Mastering the balance between playing as regular Kyle and utilizing the Beast is challenging, particularly at the start. However, once players learn to control Beast Mode, they become incredibly powerful.

Best Ways To Gear Up Fast

Your gear and weapons improve as you gain experience and level up. While better equipment is tied to your level, you can still find plenty of armor, gadgets, and other useful items throughout the game. A quick way to improve your gear is to explore every landmark, as each one contains at least one blueprint or item that can boost your stats or help you fight enemies. Don’t forget to rescue survivors too! They provide experience and can sometimes give you valuable resources and helpful gadgets early in the game.

Convoys are a good source of weapons and supplies. To access them, players need to defeat nearby zombies, including special infected, and then take Convoy Security Keys from armored Biters to open the trucks. Inside, you’ll find ammo, weapons, and high-quality military supplies. Both Convoys and landmarks reappear daily, but landmarks don’t provide unlimited armor – they offer resources and Manuals, which are essential for quickly improving your gear.

Level Up These Items & Skills As Priority

As you improve your gear and skills, you’ll be able to increase the quality of your equipment using the workbench. You’ll also choose a few skills each time you level up. First, focus on upgrading your Hunting Bow (available at the workbench in the first safe zone) to at least Rare quality. This will be your main source of quiet, long-range damage, which is essential for surviving tough, stealth-based challenges. After that, prioritize upgrading Bandages, Stamina Booster, Mods, and then other weapons.

However, the Active Landing skill is essential and should be unlocked quickly, as falling from significant heights without it will instantly kill you, resulting in experience point loss. After that, players should prioritize Power Shot for increased bow damage, Stealth Expert for quieter movement, and the Flamethrower to efficiently eliminate large groups of Biters.

Most Efficient Killing Tactics to Thrive in Dying Light: The Beast

Players have many options for defeating large groups of enemies, beyond just stealth and melee attacks. Taking down enemies rewards you with valuable crafting materials and experience, creating a beneficial cycle. However, limited supplies like ammo and stamina can make combat challenging. Here’s a guide to efficiently eliminating enemies and maximizing your rewards.

  • Use Sound Decoys (Firecrackers, SPAS) to gather a swarm near a Gas Tank, then trigger the Gas with a Throwing Knife or a Molotov Cocktail.
  • Use Decoys to lure enemies into a Car Trap or Electric Fence trap, then trigger with the remote to rack up the kills.
  • Gather enough Beast Meter by dodging and hitting enemies. Then lure lots of enemies and trigger Beast Mode to gain tons of XP and resources.
  • Use the entrance of the Town Hall by night to trigger Chases, hit enemies from the safety of the UV light, and then trigger Beast Mode to farm XP by killing Volatiles with Ease.
  • Use the Bow to kill priority targets from a safe distance. Avoid using it by night, since Volatiles cannot be one-shotted (not even with the Power Shot).
  • Use Two-Handed Weapons to deal with swarms of enemies and then switch to the UV Flashlight to keep the first row at bay while Kyle recovers Stamina. Rinse and repeat. The Scythe is especially useful for this tactic.
  • Always carry Throwing Knives. They are cheap to craft and can instantly kill Biters if they grab Kyle. Same if they want to perform a fast Stealth Kill from behind.
  • Grenades are the best way to destroy swarms. Mind the noise, though, since it will attract volatiles in a few seconds, and the blast radius, since it can insta-kill Kyle if players are not careful.
