Skate offers a wide variety of exciting tricks that let players improve their skateboarding abilities on the virtual streets of San Van. You can practice classic moves like flips, ollies, rides, and grinds – all based on real skateboarding techniques from Skatepedia – to complete challenges or simply for fun. However, ‘pumping’ isn’t a trick officially documented in Skatepedia.
It’s less about gaining height and more about controlling your speed and maintaining momentum on the board. Mastering this skill is really helpful, especially when navigating bowls and ramps without crashing or getting unwanted air. This guide will show you how to pump effectively in Skate 4.
How to Pump in Skate 4
Pumping is easiest on winding paths or hills, so first find a suitable location in San Van. If you’re new to the game and haven’t completed the tutorial, the starting lobby is perfect for practicing. If you’re somewhere without good ramps, you can build your own. Open the Object Browser (press the right d-pad button) and place a few Quarter Pipe, M Wood pieces to create a halfpipe in front and behind you.
Once you’re in position, you can start pumping for speed. In Skate 4, simply press the forward button when you reach the middle of the halfpipe. This helps you build and maintain momentum. Timing is crucial – pressing too soon will launch you out, while waiting too long will slow you down. Aim for the center of the pipe for the best results.
To make your rides smoother, particularly when going over bumps quickly, go into the settings and enable Anti-Pumping (it’s under Trick Toggles). As you play, the game will tell you if your pumping technique was good or not with a small message in the bottom right corner.
Best Settings To Pump in Skate 4
If you’re finding it hard to control transitions while skating, the game helpfully provides some assistance features. You can adjust settings to make things easier and enjoy Skate 4 without needing perfect timing. Here’s a quick look at what’s available:
- Vert Pump Assist: 50
- Enable Semi-Auto Pumping: On
- Forward to Pump: On
- Anti-Pumping: On
These settings help you maintain your speed going downhill with less work. You can find them in the Gameplay menu, under sections like Controls, Assists, and Trick Settings. Increasing the Vert Pump Assist to its maximum setting of 100 will significantly boost your pumping ability.
