This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Devil Fruits are a core element of the *One Piece* universe. They were introduced right at the beginning of the story when Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Although Luffy was the first character shown using a Devil Fruit power, many people had gained these abilities before him, and will continue to do so long after his adventures. Devil Fruits have existed throughout the history of the *One Piece* world.
According to Vegapunk in the Egghead arc, Devil Fruits originated from the dreams and wishes of people in the distant past. Those who eat them tap into a separate realm powered by these ancient desires. This means Devil Fruits have existed for centuries. Combined with information from Harley, it’s clear the very first Devil Fruit appeared during the Void Century in the world of *One Piece*. That first fruit was the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.

Many fans are surprised to learn that the Gomu Gomu no Mi – also known as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika – was actually the very first Devil Fruit to appear in the world of *One Piece*. While Eiichiro Oda has hinted at this, understanding *why* requires a closer look at the details.
Devil Fruits are a result of the desires of the people! — Vegapunk
Fans should remember that Devil Fruits first appeared during the Void Century. According to the Harley, the Forest God created them with magic during this time and unleashed them upon the world, suggesting that the Devil Fruits originated then.
So, why would the Gomu Gomu no Mi be considered the very first Devil Fruit? The explanation is straightforward. The One Piece world has faced complete destruction twice already. During the first cataclysm, Sun God Nika battled the Earth God and the Serpent of Hellfire, causing widespread chaos. Life eventually returned, hundreds or even thousands of years later, and with it came the re-emergence of a powerful source, which humans came to know as Devil Fruits. This era, like the last, unfortunately saw the rise of slavery and significant technological progress, leading to the creation of these fruits.
As long as there exist oppressed people who wish for him, Nika will always return! — Vegapunk
I’ve been thinking about why the Nika Fruit appeared first, and it seems to tie into the state of the world back then. It’s believed Devil Fruits are born from people’s deepest desires, and during a time filled with widespread slavery, the strongest desire for most would have been freedom. Essentially, the world was yearning for a hero, a liberator, and that collective wish manifested as Joy Boy – and ultimately, the Nika Fruit.
Luffy Wields The Power Of The First Devil Fruit
The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika is Legendary
As many fans are aware, Luffy possesses a unique power: the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. This means he has the ability of what is considered the very first Devil Fruit, and arguably the most extraordinary one. While it may not be the *strongest* Devil Fruit, that’s not important. Luffy’s power, symbolized by the Drums of Liberation, is enough to free those who are suffering.
The next chapter of One Piece, number 1161, will be released in two weeks on a Sunday. In Japan, it will become available at midnight on Monday, September 28, 2025. Fans around the world can read it for free on Manga Plus.
