House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

Highlights

  • Joffrey Velaryon, a Targaryen prince, is underutilized and deserves more screen time.
  • Daeron Targaryen and Helaena Targaryen, children of King Viserys and Alicent, are underutilized and could have more significant roles.
  • The dragons, core to House Targaryen, are underutilized and have only appeared briefly in the series.

As a longtime fan of House Targaryen and the Targaryen dynasty, I must express my disappointment with the underutilization of certain characters and the dragons in the first season of House of the Dragon.

The hit series House of the Dragon has brought to life an array of fascinating characters. Throughout its run, we’ve witnessed numerous houses introduce intriguing new figures, while also showcasing legendary characters from the lore of the original Game of Thrones saga.

In House of the Dragon, there are pivotal figures like Queen Rhaenyra and Aegon the Usurper who significantly contribute to the narrative. However, there are other intriguing characters whose stories are captivating yet they receive less screen time and are consequently not maximized to their full potential.

7 Joffrey Velaryon

Son of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen

House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

Joffrey Velaryon, a lesser-explored character in House of the Dragon, is actually the youngest son of Rhaenyra from her initial marriage with Laenor Velaryon, although in truth, he was sired by Sir Harwin Strong. Nonetheless, every one of Rhaenyra’s offspring maintains their Targaryen lineage and upholds lofty principles as true-born princes.

As a passionate gamer immersed in the intricate world of “Game of Thrones”, I’ve come to appreciate the depth and complexity of characters like Lucerys and Jaecerys Velaryon. However, there’s one character who has managed to evade the limelight: Joffrey. Surprisingly underrated, Joffrey is a character whose presence deserves more screen time in the future. With unfortunate events taking Lucerys from us, I can only wish that Joffrey’s turn comes next.

6 Daeron Targaryen

The Youngest Child Of King Viserys And Alicent

House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

Daeron Targaryen is another prince belonging to House Targaryen. He is born from the union between King Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. Readers have been introduced to several children of Alicent. At present, however, King Aegon sits on the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with Helaena serving as his queen.

At present, Aemond is among the most powerful men in the realm, boasting the largest dragon. In contrast, Daeron receives minimal notice and is currently residing in Old Town. The arrival of Otto Hightower in Old Town fuels anticipation among fans, hoping for more focus on Daeron as well.

5 Helaena Targaryen

The Dreamer Child Of Alicent

Helaena Targaryen, played out in House of the Dragon, is an engaging character with a captivating backstory. She is the daughter of King Viserys and Alicent, just like Daeron. Although she carries the title of Queen, it’s not her royal status that makes her intriguing to fans. Instead, it’s her vivid imagination that sets her apart.

In simpler terms, Helaena frequently experiences dragon dreams that viewers have witnessed throughout House of the Dragon’s initial episodes. Yet, these dreams hold no significant impact on the storyline. Helaena merely dreams, while her prophecies fail to influence the plot beyond providing subtle hints for fans. If Helaena acted upon her visions or if they shaped the narrative in some way, she would be more effectively used in the series.

4 Laena Velaryon

The Daughter of Rhaenys And Corlys

House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

Fans were introduced to Laena Velaryon in House of the Dragon early on. Following Aemma Arryn’s demise, Laena was suggested as a potential bride for King Viserys by Corlys and Rhaenys. However, her most notable marriage was to Daemon Targaryen. Despite being an intriguing character, fans didn’t get to witness any significant actions from Laena.

Although deeply drawn to Vhagar, viewers missed out on the pivotal moment where Laena took possession of the dragon during the initial season of the series. Subsequently, her character development focused primarily on her role as a mother for an episode. Tragically, she was later written off the show. With a rich backstory as Daemon’s companion, the mother of Rhaena and Baela, and a formidable dragon rider herself, Laena held significant potential that went largely unexplored.

3 Baela Targaryen

Daughter Of Daemon And Laena Velaryon

Baela Targaryen, played by Milly Alcock, is the daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon. She’s an intriguing character with great potential that fans are eager to see more of in “House of Dragon.” At present, however, she has limited screen time and isn’t fully developed yet.

In the initial installment of House of the Dragon, Baela had a minimal impact with an essentially irrelevant part. Presently, she is accompanying Rhaenyra and may significantly contribute to the upcoming conflict. So far, neither Baela nor Moondancer have left any noteworthy marks.

2 Rhaena Targaryen

Daughter Of Daemon And Laena Velaryon

House Of The Dragon: Underutilized Characters

Similar to Baela, Rhaena Targaryen is a character whose stories fans are eager to explore further in the series. With so much untapped potential, it’s disappointing that we haven’t delved deeper into her character.

In Pentos, the narrative briefly shifted its attention to her, but unfortunately, her role became less important once more. Yet, this character holds immense depth, and should the writers choose to explore her further, an engaging story awaits to be unfolded.

1 The Dragons

The Core Of House Targaryen

Certainly, the dragons in House of the Dragon are the least showcased characters so far. Fans have barely witnessed many dragon scenes in this series. Thus far, only Caraxes, Syrax, Seasmoke, and Vhagar have had substantial screen time. The rest have made brief appearances.

In one episode, Meleys successfully joined the scene, whereas dragons such as Sunfyre, Moondancer, Tyraxes, Tessarion, and others have yet to make an appearance. Fans were eagerly anticipating more screen time for these dragons throughout the first season and beyond. However, they have yet to leave a significant impact on the storyline.
