For Nor Vanek, the leading hero in “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” this is a significant responsibility. I was deeply involved in shaping the narrative for “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn” as its lead designer. When embarking on this project, my goal was to craft a compelling story that would draw players into their epic struggle against the gods. A Strong Central Figure
In a story-driven game, a well-developed character is essential. The tale in “Final Fantasy 7” deeply hinges on Cloud Strife’s character, and without him, the narrative might falter. Similarly, the “Yakuza/Like a Dragon” series and “Another Crab’s Treasure” rely heavily on their distinct protagonists, Kril and Cloud (or the player character in Yakuza), to convey their unique tones.
In the story of “Flintlock,” Nor Vanek holds a significant position as she is the one who observes the catastrophe unfold firsthand, bearing a personal connection to solving the issues related to the Door’s opening and the looming danger from the Dead and Gods. This concern is not only important to Nor but also pertinent to the players.
As a writer myself, I can deeply relate to the importance of creating well-developed characters in a story. In the case of “Flintlock,” the character of Nor holds a significant role in the narrative, especially in relation to her connection with Enki.
Baider explained that Nor was taken in by Baz, a Coalition soldier. Baz was an expert in gunpowder, a new innovation that was powering a societal shift, prior to the Dead breaking through the Door. In a story reminiscent of Aloy and Rost from Horizon Zero Dawn, Baz taught Nor how to fight in trenches and tunnels and against the Dead. Like Aloy following Rost’s footsteps into being a Seeker, Nor follows Baz’s to become an elite Coalition Sapper.
The Coalition, the organization that Baz and Nor belong to, was formed as an emergency response to the disaster Nor witnessed with her own eyes. From a young age, Nor demonstrated bravery by joining Baz in combat, fighting for the Coalition, and honing her fierce talent. For ten years, the Coalition has held the line keeping the Dead in the city of Dawn, but their supplies are running thin by the time the player takes control of Nor.
As a fan, I’ve come across a compelling narrative in various forms of media – books like “Flintlock” and “Horizon,” movies, and video games. This story follows a young woman named Aloy, who strives to become strong and emulates her adoptive parent, despite their imperfections as parents. Although this narrative isn’t unique to these specific works, it is a universal coming-of-age theme that resonates deeply with audiences.
I’m a big fan of games where the main character is strong-willed and focused, allowing me to truly experience their agency in the story. That’s why we put great care into ensuring Nor exhibits these qualities. Her journey is filled with pivotal moments that shape her character and help her understand the world around her, making her growth and past relatable to players.
