Borderlands 4 is packed with fun references to popular culture and hidden surprises for players to discover as they enjoy its fast-paced, action-packed gameplay. Keep an eye out for nods to Pokémon while completing side missions, especially one called ‘The Wayward Gun’.
Players will embark on a mission to track down and capture intelligent, self-aware turrets that roam around. Keep an eye out for Pokémon-inspired surprises along the way – if you’re skilled enough to catch them all!
How to Start the “Wayward Gun” Side Quest in Borderlands 4
Okay, so I just unlocked a new side quest called Wayward Gun in *Borderlands 4*. You need to finish the main mission ‘A Lot to Process’ – it’s the fourth one – to get it going. Once that’s done, you can head over to the Terminus Range and find the Cuspid Climb area to start the quest!

When you arrive at the settlement of Dusk’s Advent, you’ll meet a character named Emile who says, “I choose you, to save our A-.” This is a playful reference to Pokémon. Speaking with Emile will begin the “Wayward Gun” quest in *Borderlands 4*.

Immediately after you start the quest, you’ll be attacked by robotic gun-turrets, and you’ll have to defeat them to continue. Once they’re destroyed, Emile will ask you to speak with the quartermaster, Bash – a playful nod to the Pokémon character, Ash.
Meeting Bash & Acquiring the Catch-tainers

Once you’ve spoken with Bash in the quartermaster’s office, you’ll need to go to the nearby Ammo Dump. It holds a special item that will be useful for dealing with those walking turrets – you probably already have an idea of how this will help! Head to the Ammo Shed to continue with the mission.

Once players reach the Ammo Shed, Bash will tell them the building is locked and they need to destroy the generators that are powering the barriers to gain entry.
Okay, so heads up, there are some turrets around here, and I definitely recommend taking them out *before* you push forward. The first generator you need to destroy is actually on top of the Ammo Shed – it’s the one with the barrier around it. You can just shoot it from the ground, and it should go down pretty easily.

For the second generator, you’ll need to grapple up the building opposite the Ammo Shed.

Once you get to the building, locate the second generator inside and destroy it by shooting it. This will deactivate the barrier blocking the Ammo Shed.

Now use the zipline to reach the ammo shed, and pick up the Catch-tainers inside.
Capturing Tediore Offsprings & Defeating the Bomb Squad

Once you’ve collected the Catch-tainers, go to the location shown on your quest marker. There, you need to put the Catch-tainers down in the specified area and then pick one up to begin capturing Tediore Offspring – those walking gun-turrets. Just throw a Catch-tainer at them, and they’ll be captured, similar to how Poke Balls work.

After you defeat five of the roaming robotic Pokémon, you’ll be surprised by a group called the Bomb Squad, who are clearly inspired by Team Rocket. These two trainers, Jake and Josey, will pop up from underground and begin battling you, first with a bit of familiar dialogue.
After defeating the current enemies, players can choose to capture six more Tediore Offsprings, or continue the Wayward Gun side quest by heading to Rock Bottom in *Borderlands 4*.
Defeating PEWPEW & Its Army

Once you’ve hit the lowest point in the area, you’ll need to destroy a number of robotic turrets. After taking out enough of them, the goal will shift to fighting PEWPEW and his forces.

To continue the Wayward Gun quest, you’ll need to climb up to the Grey Havenage Safehouse. Once you arrive, you’ll face a mini-boss named Pew, who will appear with some enemies. You must defeat Pew and his minions to move forward.

After that, players will hear a message from PEWPEW, the large turret boss, who is positioned high up in the GIM. To get to the GIM, players need to go back to the Grey Havenage Safehouse and use the container to climb upstairs. Then, they can use a double-jump and hover to reach the GIM.

Once you arrive at the GIM, you’ll face PEWPEW and his forces. This area can be challenging because enemies will attack from every side. Prioritize finding a secure position and eliminating the moving turrets before continuing.

Once you defeat the PEWPEW boss, he’ll ask you to erase his memory so he can be happy and unaware. To do this, you’ll need to access a terminal and reset the GIM core. This will finish the Wayward Gun side quest and all the Pokémon-inspired jokes in Borderlands 4.
Completing this side quest will give players several rewards, such as a powerful assault rifle that ranges from green to purple in rarity, and a special “Loyal Customer” paint job for their Echo-4 weapon.
