Nintendo Making Apparent Changes to Switch Game Cases

I’ve been noticing something really interesting lately! Some people online have pointed out that the cases for regular Nintendo Switch games are starting to change. They used to be clear, but now they’re switching to a red color – the same red as what people expect for the new Nintendo Switch 2! It’s all over social media, but we’re not sure yet if Nintendo is actually planning to use these red cases for all future Switch games, or if this is just a temporary thing.

As a Switch fan, I really loved how the original Switch games came in clear cases. It meant developers could create awesome reversible cover art that we could display! But I was a little disappointed when I heard the new Switch 2 games are coming in solid red cases. While they definitely look different on store shelves, a lot of us are bummed because we won’t be able to show off that cool reversible art anymore – it was a fun way to customize how we displayed our games.

Some Switch Games Are Reportedly Being Sold In Red Cases

While the packaging for the new Nintendo Switch 2 is different from the original, some existing Switch games are getting a makeover. Recently, a German retailer, Media Markt, was selling copies of *Red Dead Redemption* and *Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy* for the original Switch in red game cases instead of the usual clear ones. These versions included download codes instead of game cartridges, making the red cases purely cosmetic. Now, screenshots shared on Twitter suggest the upcoming *Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2* bundle in Japan will also use the red case design.

Although the color of the game cases changed, the overall design stayed the same for all three Nintendo Switch games, with the console’s logo still in the upper left corner. It’s unknown if Nintendo will continue using red cases instead of clear ones for future games. This change is odd because different colored cases would have made it simpler for customers to distinguish between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games. Switching some Nintendo Switch games to red cases might therefore cause some confusion for players.

It’s currently unknown if the red game cases recently released for the Nintendo Switch will be available in other regions. As highly anticipated games like *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* and *Pokemon Legends: Z-A* are set to launch on both the Switch and the new Switch 2, it remains to be seen how these releases will impact physical game sales.
