The *Borderlands* series is known for hiding fun easter eggs and references to popular movies, games, and trends, and *Borderlands 4* continues that tradition. While it seems the developers have toned down the silly jokes, there are still plenty of clever pop culture references to discover. We’ve gathered a list of the best *Borderlands 4* easter eggs and how to find them, so you can impress your friends with your knowledge!
Pop Culture References Within Weapon & Item Text
Halo, Mad Max, and Other Iconic Franchises Are Quoted
Borderlands 4’s Legendary weapons and items are full of hidden jokes and references! It’s not just how the weapons work, but also the flavor text – the small descriptions you find. For example, the Lead Balloon Shotgun has a quote from Halo 2: “For a brick, he flew pretty good.” And the War Paint Repkit references Mad Max: Fury Road with the line, “You shall ride eternal.” There are tons of these little nods to other games and movies – like a mission keycard quoting American Psycho with “It even has a watermark.” So, next time you find a cool new weapon or item, don’t forget to read the description – you might be surprised by the funny references!
Dunk Watson Returns
An 11-Year Slam and Jam is Finally Completed
- Location: “And Welcome to the Jam” in Camp Spinesquelch, Tonnage Peel, Carcadia Burn
If you haven’t played *Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel*, you might miss a fantastic easter egg in *Borderlands 4* involving Dunk Watson. Dunk Watson is a character who dreamed of making the perfect slam dunk – a dunk so amazing it launched him out of the gravity of Elpis’s moon! He’s been floating in space for eleven years, but the side mission ‘And Welcome to the Jam’ lets you bring him safely back to earth, finally completing his incredible slam dunk without needing food, water, or air. It’s time to give this talented basketball player a warm welcome home after his long time in space!
Tediore Pokemon & Team Rocket
Gotta Catch Them All!
- Location: “Wayward Gun” in Dusk’s Advent, Cuspid Climb, Terminus Range
Okay, so there’s this *amazing* side mission in the game where you basically catch Pokémon… but they’re guns! Seriously, these Tediore weapons are like little monsters with legs, and you have to go around rounding them up. You talk to this guy named Bash – get it, like Ash Ketchum? – to get special ‘Catch-tainers’ which are basically Poké Balls for these gun-monsters. It’s super funny, and the best part is when the Bomb Squad shows up – they’re totally a send-up of Team Rocket’s Jesse and James! It’s a really clever and hilarious little quest.
Shrek and Donkey
What Are You Doing in Their Swamp?!
- Location: Mirehome, South East of Fortress Indomita in Idolator’s Noose, the Fadefields
While exploring the southern part of Idolator’s Noose in the Fadefields, players will come across Mirehome, a small swamp area. Signs warn people to stay away, but if you continue forward, you’ll encounter Wreck and Burro, two new enemies. Wreck is clearly based on the character Shrek, and Burro is Spanish for ‘Donkey,’ Shrek’s famous companion. The large, green ogre should make the connection obvious! Players can defeat these two and explore their swamp, but it’s just a fun easter egg – there isn’t a specific reward for doing so in the open world of Kairos.
Embracer’s Bluff is Meta Commentary on Embracer Group
Gearbox Relish in Their Freedom Alongside Take-Two
- Location: Embracer’s Buff, Lopside, Carcadia Burn
Gearbox Software is known for its playful and sometimes ironic sense of humor, and that’s evident in a location within their game, Embracer’s Bluff. This rundown, impoverished area of the game is likely a playful jab at Embracer Group, the company that bought Gearbox in 2021. Embracer’s later business decisions, including significant layoffs at Volition and the eventual sale of Gearbox, may have inspired the developers to create this in-game location. Embracer’s Bluff depicts a struggling community where residents scavenge for survival, while the mayor enjoys a life of luxury – a possible commentary on Embracer’s corporate practices.
Famous Movie Weapons
Ghostbusters, Men in Black, and Even Game of Thrones All Have Unique Weapons
Borderlands 4 doesn’t just color weapons to reference pop culture – it designs entire weapons based on famous movie props. If you’re lucky, you might find “Ohm I Got” from Bramblesong, which is basically a Proton Pack from Ghostbusters that shoots crackling energy. There’s also the tiny but powerful “Noisy Cricket” pistol from Men in Black, available from Sidney Pointylegs. Start hunting for these legendary weapons and discover all the other fun, hidden references!
Tannis on a Fish
A Returning Easter Egg, Now Featuring Handsome Jack
- Location: North West of The Howl, Fadefields. Shoot explosive barrels: Corrosive, Cryo, Incendiary, Shock, and Radiation, in that order.
Finding easter eggs is always fun, and the one featuring Dr. Patricia Tannis is especially great! Although Tannis doesn’t appear in person in *Borderlands 4*, there’s a cardboard cutout of her riding a fish. Players can trigger a funny scene by shooting a series of barrels in a specific order – Corrosive, Cryo, Incendiary, Shock, and Radiation – near a shack in the northwest area of The Howl in the Fadefields. This will cause the Tannis cutout to explode a Handsome Jack cutout! It’s a returning easter egg that also unlocks the “Cut That Out” trophy, so it’s worth trying!
