New Details About Canceled Perfect Dark Reboot Have Surfaced

Recently, details about the canceled Perfect Dark reboot have emerged from internal documents. These materials reveal gameplay ideas and artwork that were never shown to the public, giving us a better understanding of how the game was progressing before development was halted.

The Initiative, a studio owned by Xbox Game Studios, first announced a reboot of the game Perfect Dark at The Game Awards in December 2020. However, after five years, Microsoft decided to cancel the project and close the studio in Santa Monica as part of broader cost reductions. The exact number of employees affected by the closure is unknown, though the studio had around 50 people in 2021 and likely grew after starting work on the now-cancelled game.

Leaked Perfect Dark Documents Talk of Espionage Sim in Cairo

Just over two and a half months after the cancellation of *Perfect Dark*, some internal documents from the project have been published online by MP1st. These leaked materials reveal the game was planned as a futuristic spy thriller set in Cairo and detail some of its intended gameplay features. One system, called “Adrenaline,” would have allowed players to use a replenishing adrenaline supply to activate abilities like slow motion, better aim, and increased speed. Another system, called “Relentless,” was also mentioned, but details about how it would work weren’t included.

Perfect Dark Revival Aimed for an ‘Eco Sci-Fi’ Aesthetic

Recently revealed artwork shows locations inspired by Cairo for the upcoming game. One image features Joanna Dark, the main character, holding a handgun. This art is similar to previously released pieces, but her hairstyle appears different, hinting that her design changed during the game’s creation. Though some players have described the game’s style as ‘solarpunk,’ internal documents refer to the setting as ‘eco sci-fi.’

Perfect Dark Reboot Was Reportedly Still in Vertical Slice Phase in Spring 2025

Documents indicate that the team behind the cancelled *Perfect Dark* game was still working on an early playable version, known as a vertical slice, as late as April 2025. This slow progress – five years of development resulting in only a vertical slice – likely contributed to the game’s cancellation. Microsoft may have determined that the project wasn’t moving quickly enough to continue, even before the company began significant cost-cutting measures that resulted in around 9,000 layoffs. The mention of this vertical slice being part of a “Season 1” supports earlier reports that the game was planned as an episodic release.

Now that The Initiative has been shut down, a new *Perfect Dark* game would probably need to start completely from scratch with a different developer. Currently, it doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon. Crystal Dynamics, which is part of Embracer Group, was previously developing the game, and Microsoft even considered selling the project to Take-Two Interactive before canceling it. However, that potential deal fell through because the companies couldn’t agree on who would own the game and its intellectual property if they worked together.
