As a long-time gamer and an avid Xbox fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear about Microsoft’s new Xbox 360-themed dynamic background for the Xbox Series X/S. The Xbox 360 era holds a special place in my heart, having been introduced to the console during my formative years as a gamer.

Microsoft’s unveiling of an Xbox 360-style background for the latest Xbox Series X/S consoles brought about a wave of nostalgia among gamers. Players who are intrigued can easily add this new theme to their console’s dashboard at no cost.

During the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft’s influence on the console market was particularly strong. While the original Xbox marked Microsoft’s entry into the game console industry, it was the Xbox 360 that left a significant impact. Despite its hardware issues, such as the Red Ring of Death, the massive popularity of the Xbox 360 shaped the modern landscape of online gaming with Xbox Live. This service became an industry standard, inspiring competitors like PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online, and others to adopt similar features.

Microsoft paid tribute to the influence of the past by introducing an exciting new customization option for Xbox Series X/S users. This update comes in the form of a fresh, dynamic background inspired by the original Xbox 360 “Blades” interface. The new Xbox 360 Blades dynamic background evokes memories of the early dashboard design and is cherished by long-time Xbox fans who fondly recall launching classic Xbox 360 titles like King Kong using the Blades.

How to Apply the Xbox 360 Blades Dynamic Background for Xbox Series X/S

The Xbox 360’s background design, called Blades, features a central green area surrounded by iconic blades on each side of the screen. For Xbox Series X and S users, changing it is just a matter of accessing the menu and browsing through the selection of available options.

  • Bring up the menu using the Xbox button on the controller.
  • Open the “Profile and System” submenu and enter Settings.
  • Under the “General” settings tab, select “Personalization.”
  • Enter the “My Background” menu, select “Dynamic Backgrounds.”
  • Choose “Xbox 360 Blades” from the “Featured” tab.

I was excitedly anticipating the comeback of the beloved Xbox 360 Blades dashboard, but unfortunately, it’s just an aesthetic enhancement in the new dynamic background. The blades don’t really move or provide any additional information on their own; they merely serve as a backdrop for the current Xbox Series X/S user interface. Despite their appearance, the way we interact with the dashboard remains unchanged.

Some users who missed the old interface of Xbox 360 expressed their longing and requested Microsoft to revive it in a more authentic way, referring to it as a “heartfelt tribute” to Xbox 360’s legacy. Meanwhile, others were reminded that Microsoft will be shutting down the Xbox 360 store on July 29, 2024. Before this closure, Microsoft is offering free classic Xbox 360 games for players to enjoy on their newer Xbox Series consoles through backwards compatibility.
