Game of Thrones Characters Who Are Better in the Show

As someone who has closely followed and been deeply invested in the world of “Game of Thrones,” I can’t help but notice the significant differences between some characters when comparing the books to the show. And while there are certainly debates to be had about which version is more faithful to George R.R. Martin’s original vision, there are a few characters whose on-screen portrayals have enriched my experience of the story.

Many individuals hold the opinion that the original novels which inspired “Game of Thrones” surpass the acclaimed HBO show in numerous aspects. The narratives offer more intricately woven storylines and give greater significance to character relationships due to the multiple viewpoints presented in the texts.

Despite all the criticisms, the makers of the show succeeded in many aspects. The acting choices were exceptional, and though not every modification made by Weiss and Benioff enhanced the original content, certain “Game of Thrones” characters shine more brightly on screen than they do in print.

1 Osha

Played by Natalia Tena

As a gamer, I can tell you that in the storyline similar to the TV show, Osha joins the household at Winterfell after an unfortunate raid fails. Later on, when Winterfell is seized by Theon, she sets off with Bran and Rickon. However, in the books, things unfold differently: Osha separates from Bran earlier, leading Rickon and Shaggydog to Skagos instead. After that, her character disappears from the narrative.

In this version, on-screen Osha spends more time in the limelight, demonstrating her commitment to the Stark family and her skills in combat. Regrettably, they are eventually deceived by Smalljon Umber, resulting in their tragic deaths. Osha meets her end bravely, however, as she is killed while trying to attack Ramsay Bolton.

2 Ygritte

Played by Rose Leslie

Ygritte is an engaging character in both the books and the television series. However, her portrayal and connection with Jon are more authentic in the show. A significant reason for this is the exceptional chemistry between Rose Leslie and Kit Harington. This captivating on-screen romance even extended off-camera, as Leslie and Harington tied the knot a few years later.

Although the book character of Ygritte is more intricate than her TV portrayal and can express a wider range of emotions, her bold and captivating presence in a story filled with complex female leads was still an engaging and intriguing addition, despite having less depth.

3 Tormund Giantsbane

Played by Kristofer Hivju

In the books and the show, Jon forms an unexpected friendship with Mance Rayder. This develops when Jon goes beyond the wall, and in the books, their bond is forged despite Mance not meeting a tragic end at the hands of Stannis, allowing him to remain significant later in the story.

After Mance’s departure, Weiss and Benioff sought a wildling ally for Jon. Among their options, they picked Tormund. Although Jon has friendship with Tormund in the books, their bond is significantly weaker. In the novels, the show’s Tormund portrayal differs greatly – he is older, and plays a less significant role during the attack on Castle Black compared to his on-screen representation.

4 Tywin Lannister

Played by Charles Dance

There are plenty of Game of Thrones characters who are improved as a result of their casting, but none more so than Tywin Lannister. Charles Dance is one of very few actors with the kind of gravitas needed to make such a dastardly character so likable, and the chemistry that he shares with some of his fellow cast members helps to further round off some of Tywin’s sharp edges.

Tywin Lannister is portrayed as a self-serving and dreadful character in the books, putting his own interests first above all else. However, compared to other characters, he appears more reasonable and less vindictive. He even displays affection for his offspring and can seem admirable at times, such as during his dealings with Arry at Harrenhal.

5 Shae

Played by Sibel Kekilli

George R. R. Martin expressed some reservations about certain creative choices made by Weiss and Benioff in “Game of Thrones,” but he appeared to be satisfied with the alterations to the character of Shae. In his commentary for episode eight of season three, Martin noted a few aspects of Shae’s portrayal in the show, recognizing that her depiction added a fresh dimension to the narrative.

In the books, Shae doesn’t hold Tyrion in high regard, viewing him as merely another John to her. Some readers found it perplexing that Tyrion didn’t recognize this, considering his intelligence, and all the more so after his first marriage’s events. The depiction of Shae caring for Tyrion in the show adds depth to their relationship, making her choice to stay with him more relatable, despite the significant risks involved.

6 Jaqen H’ghar

Played by Tom Wlaschiha

From a devoted fan’s perspective, I’d argue that the show adaptation of Jaqen H’ghar surpasses his literary counterpart in several ways. Firstly, in the books, Jaqen’s storyline with the Faceless Men remains incomplete, leaving his character arc unfulfilled. In contrast, the show version offers a more comprehensive portrayal as it combines elements of both Jaqen and the Kindly Man. This amalgamation not only provides a more satisfying viewing experience but also adds depth to the intriguing nature of the Faceless Men.

From my perspective as a fan, I’d rephrase it like this: In the television adaptation, Jaqen H’ghar portrays the public persona of the Faceless Men, deviating from their enigmatic roles in the books. This alteration might diminish some of the intrigue surrounding the group, but Jaqen provides a sense of consistency during an uncertain period. His charming demeanor and identifiable face add approachability to the otherwise elusive organization. Despite his secrets, having both a name and a face makes him more relatable and engaging for the audience.

7 Bronn

Played by Jerome Flynn

Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn with great skill, is often mentioned among Game of Thrones characters who shine more brightly on screen than in the books. Though he’s far from noble and possesses few admirable traits, this sellsword still captivates audiences and earns our affection.

In simpler terms, he’s free from obligations to duty or honor, enabling him to roll up his sleeves and be highly successful in his profession. His wit is just as sharp as his weapon in the series, bringing about some of the most humorous scenes. Additionally, his relationships with Jaime and Tyrion add complexity to his character, although he remains essentially self-centered.
