Sparing Baldur’s Gate 3’s Nere actually gives him a fate crueler than death

As a longtime fan of Baldur’s Gate and its intricate stories, I have come across many characters that leave a lasting impression. However, none have stirred such intense emotions in me as Nere, the loathsome dwarf from Grymforge. From the moment I encountered him, his hateful demeanor towards the gnomes and derogatory remarks about other NPCs made my blood boil.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my strong feelings towards Baldur’s Gate 3’s intricately crafted narrative. One character that stands out as particularly despicable to me is none other than Nere. From the moment he graced our screens in Grymforge, his actions towards the worker Gnomes and his derogatory comments about various NPCs left a bitter taste in the community’s collective mouth.

In many cases, players decide to eliminate him since it leads them to Moonrise Towers for a successful run. But, as reported by Reddit user ‘Padzi’, an unexpected outcome occurs when players spare his life – he endures a more cruel fate than death.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, I discovered that if we spare Nere, he gets transformed into a zombie by Balthazar. It might seem more humane to put an end to his suffering and eliminate Balthazar permanently. By doing so, I could choose between various methods such as beating him to a pulp, decapitating him, stripping him of any valuable items, or even tossing his corpse into a lava flow. It’s crucial to remember that every decision we make in the game has consequences, and sometimes, the supposedly merciful choice might not be the easiest one to make.

This happens when you spare Nere. I was surprised.

Balthazar is a cruel figure with expertise in Necromancy, inflicting harm on living beings and raising the undead as zombies. Consequently, enduring Balthazar’s brutal attacks resulting in becoming a zombie might be more terrifying than meeting your demise at the hands of the players.

I was taken aback when I heard one player blithely remark, “Who needs mercy for him? He’s just scum. I enjoy eliminating him instead.” The others were equally shocked by his callousness. Meanwhile, another player exclaimed, “Wow, I had spared Nere in my current playthrough and didn’t expect to encounter him here!”

In this scenario, Nere probably traveled to the Temple of Shar from Grymforge initially, but encountered Balthazar along the way, who was determined to thwart his plans. Known for his cruelty, Balthazar attacked Nere mercilessly and transformed him into a zombie.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re constantly faced with making decisions. If you’re beginning a new game, you have the option to transform Nere into a zombie. However, if you’re just embarking on your adventure in Faerun for the first time, be cautious when engaging Nere in Grymforge and utilize your companions wisely during battle.
