  • Illari’s unique background as an Inti Warrior offers a fresh narrative thread for the game’s evolving lore.

As a dedicated fan of Overwatch since its release in 2016, I’ve had the privilege of watching this game grow and evolve over the years. One thing that has always set Overwatch apart from other multiplayer games is its deep and intricately crafted lore. Each character’s unique backstory contributes to the game’s rich narrative, shaping maps and experiences in meaningful ways.

One reason why Overwatch has thrived is Blizzard’s dedication to developing the universe’s rich backstory and intricate lore for the game. The diverse roster of playable characters not only adds to the gameplay’s excitement but also enables Blizzard to create detailed histories, contributing to a more immersive narrative. Though it may be overlooked in-game, this lore significantly influences map designs and overall experiences. Each character plays a distinct role, which continuously develops as the game advances.

As a dedicated gamer of Overwatch since its debut in 2016, I’ve witnessed how some heroes have left indelible marks on the game’s lore, while others have been overshadowed. Zenyatta, the support hero who’s been part of the roster for a long time, has often been yearned for more attention from the community. His quiet presence in the game hasn’t translated to significant narrative cinematics or in-game events. However, the recent addition of Illari as a new support hero feels disconnected from Overwatch’s rich storyline, and it’s essential that we bridge this gap moving forward.

Illari Needs More Ties To the Wider Lore of Overwatch 2

Zenyatta is a veteran character in Overwatch, joining the game when it was first released in 2016. He’s a support hero with a unique backstory as an Omnic – a type of robot originating from Earth. Omnics were created by humans but eventually rebelled due to mistreatment, making Zenyatta one of the intriguing figures among Overwatch’s roster.

In the world of Overwatch, the robotic uprising is referred to as the Omnic Crisis – a pivotal moment in the game’s backstory. Instead of clashing with humans, Zenyotta chose to align himself with the Shambali Order, an enlightened community of Omnic monks. This alliance deepened his bond with Ramattra, the Omnic tank hero, who played a significant role in Overwatch 2’s cooperative storyline. The connection between Zenyotta and Ramattra was a major focus, leading to a potential expansion of Zenyotta’s lore in the game. However, due to the termination of PvE content in Overwatch 2, it remains uncertain if this intriguing backstory will be further explored.

Zenyatta, though connected to some Overwatch heroes such as Genji, hasn’t received the same level of cinematic and narrative focus as characters like Bastion and Reinhardt. However, another hero deserves more attention for potential story development in Overwatch 2. In August 2023, Illari was introduced as a new support hero in Overwatch 2, bringing fresh lore to the game that remains largely untapped almost a year later.

Illari Should Be the Start of a New Wave of Overwatch 2 Lore

Illari is the sole survivor of the Inti Warriors, an elite Peruvian military unit capable of drawing strength from the sun. Unfortunately, during the exercise of her abilities, there was a catastrophic mishap that resulted in a solar explosion, annihilating the rest of her comrades. Few details have emerged regarding Illari’s past. However, it is known that she delved into the backstory of Ana, another Overwatch support character, as part of her education. This opens up numerous possibilities for Blizzard to weave Illari’s tale into their expansive IP narrative.

Although it’s disappointing that Zenyatta’s story may not be continued in the future, Overwatch 2 is presently introducing new heroes faster than the franchise can develop their backstories and main narrative. For instance, Venture has joined the game since Illari’s introduction to Overwatch 2. To maintain a cohesive storyline, Blizzard should focus on fleshing out these newer characters like Illari, whose background could initiate an exciting new phase in Overwatch 2’s lore and connect its diverse narratives once more.
