While battling boss dragons like Bayle The Dread and Ancient Dragon Lansseax is thrilling, I’ve come to appreciate the quieter, less combative dragons in games such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3. These colossal creatures often serve as part of the environment, lying dormant or even integrated into the landscape. Here’s my take on some of the most awe-inspiring dragons FromSoftware has given us:
8 Darkeater Midir (Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City)

Among the most formidable and legendary dragon battles in FromSoftware’s gaming history, Darkeater Midir holds a place as the relatively smaller dragon on this list. With a length of approximately 80 meters from snout to tail tip, Midir represents one of the largest dragons players can encounter in direct combat, yet he is not the biggest overall.
In my gaming experience, I came across Darkeater Midir, a formidable dragon offspring bred by the gods, hidden in Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City expansion. Midir is no pushover; he’s one of the most challenging and merciless opponents I’ve faced in all of Dark Souls 3.
7 Ancient Dragon (Dark Souls 2)

In “Dark Souls 2,” the Ancient Dragon is among the game’s largest bosses, surpassing Darkeater Midir in size. Players encountering him atop the Dragon Shrine aren’t required to slay the Ancient Dragon; instead, they may communicate with him telepathically and proceed without engaging in combat if preferred. Alternatively, players can opt for a battle against this enormous beast.
Although the Ancient Dragon may boast the biggest health bar in the game, surpassing that of Midir’s, battling it is surprisingly less daunting than anticipated. Due to its size and sluggishness, most of its attacks can be dodged with caution, allowing players to emerge victorious against this formidable foe.
6 Divine Dragon (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice)

At the Fountainhead Palace, the Divine Dragon or Everblossom Dragon battle sets things ablaze. Unlike other battles in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice with non-human adversaries, this encounter is a noteworthy exception. The Divine Dragon fight stands out as an unforgettable and cinematic experience. Instead of engaging the creature in a standard boss fight, players are tasked with executing specific sequences to triumph in this visually stunning battle.
As a seasoned dragon enthusiast and collector of Eastern mythology, I’ve come across numerous dragons throughout my years of research and exploration. Among them, there is one that truly stands out – a Japanese dragon with a serpentine design, reminiscent of the traditional water-dwelling creatures from this rich culture. This magnificent beast bears an uncanny resemblance to a giant serpent graced with the addition of legs.
5 Archdragon Corpse (Dark Souls 3)

In “Dark Souls 3,” the first dragon on our list that seems extinct is the enigmatic Archdragon carcass located at Archdragon Peak, a hidden area in the game. While we don’t have much information about this enormous beast, fans have approximated its length to be an impressive 166 meters based on their measurements.
In contrast, King Ghidorah stands at around 160 meters tall in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which is roughly equivalent to Darkeater Midir’s height. Witnessing a battle between these two titans in “Dark Souls 3” would have been an awe-inspiring sight, but it’s uncertain if commoners possess the capability to slay a dragon twice as large.
4 Dragon God (Demon’s Souls)

In the initial Soulsborne game, “Demon’s Souls,” developed by FromSoftware, a colossal Dragon Deity made its appearance. This Dragon Deity was the largest dragon creation from the studio for a long time, until the release of “Elden Ring.” Nestled in the Underground Temple, this Dragon Deity is an awe-inspiring sight at 182 meters in length and holds the power to instantly eliminate the player’s character. To put things into perspective, this Dragon Deity is nearly as large as Godzilla from the recent Monsterverse films, with the Kaiju measuring approximately 177 meters long.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered many fierce battles, but none quite compare to facing the Dragon God. Unlike other foes, it’s not about wading in with my sword and dealing as much damage as possible. Instead, I must dodge the dragon’s relentless onslaughts and make a beeline for the two massive ballistae. Once there, I can weaken him by firing powerful bolts. Afterward, with the Dragon God weakened, I can finally focus on delivering the coup de grâce to his vulnerable head.
3 Elder Dragon Greyoll (Elden Ring)
182 Meters Long
In Elden Ring, the final dragon on this list that players can engage in battle is the colossal Elder Dragon Greyoll, located in the Dragonbarrow area of Caelid. This dragon is approximately the size of a God-dragon and is visible from a distance while exploring the region. Witnessing Greyoll is an awe-inspiring experience, but the encounter with this dragon holds unique charm. Unlike other dragons, Greyoll’s advanced age and decay from Scarlet Rot make it unable to confront players head-on during combat.
Players have an option to bypass engaging Greyoll directly and focus on eliminating the five guardian dragons surrounding it instead. This strategy eventually leads to the defeat of Greyoll. An added advantage is that this spot is relatively safe for players, making the smaller dragons perish upon Greyoll’s demise. With this technique mastered, taking down Elden Ring’s formidable Elder Dragon Greyoll becomes achievable for even early-game characters, granting a substantial amount of runes for swift leveling up of the Tarnished. Though simple in concept, be prepared for a lengthy process as Greyoll boasts an impressive health pool (87,664 HP), which ranks among the largest for Elden Ring’s bosses.
2 Ancient Dragon Gransax (Elden Ring)
328 Meters Long
Another noteworthy entry on the list: The Ancient Dragon Gransax in Elden Ring dwarfs both Dragon God and Elder Dragon Greyoll in size, making it an awe-inspiring sight. In FromSoftware‘s renowned game series, this colossal dragon awaits players, already deceased, sparing them the battle.
With a colossal size of 328 meters, the ancient dragon Gransax assaulted Leyndell, the Royal Capital, representing the first instance that the city’s fortifications were unable to shield it. The beast’s carcass now occupies a significant portion of the capital, offering a striking and unusual experience for navigating the remains of this stunningly crafted game location by the studio.
1 Unknown Colossal Dragon Corpse (Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree)

In the latest update, or “Shadow of the Erdtree” expansion for “Elden Ring,” a monumental dragon discovery was made (as reported by YT’s Zullie the Witch). This gargantuan carcass, marked on the map of the Land of Shadows near the Finger Ruins in the Rhia region, is approximately 392 meters long. Surpassing even the size of the ancient dragon Gransax, this behemoth sets a new standard for dragons in FromSoftware games.
As a long-time fan of FromSoftware’s intricately designed worlds and mythologies, I must confess that this latest discovery leaves me both intrigued and somewhat underwhelmed.
