Apex Legends Community Plummets Ahead of Esports World Cup Event

As a long-time fan and avid player of Apex Legends, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent turn of events leading up to the Esports World Cup. The community’s sentiment towards the game has taken a nosedive following Respawn Entertainment’s decision to remove the option to purchase battle passes with in-game currency, Apex Coins.

At the Esports World Cup coming up in a few days, Apex Legends will be the main attraction, hosting its tournament from August 1st to 4th. Regrettably, the game has faced backlash due to certain contentious updates, resulting in a significant drop in community approval. On Steam, this discontent is reflected in an influx of negative reviews, causing the game’s rating to plunge to ‘Overwhelmingly Negative’.

What is the potential impact on the audience for the Esports World Cup and later, the ALGS Split 2 Pro League?

Not So Legendary

Recently, there was a controversial move by Respawn: they took away the option for players to buy in-game battle passes using Apex Coins. Although Respawn justified this decision by pointing out the monetary benefits from turning the battle pass into a cash-only item, many gamers were unhappy and expressed their discontent through countless negative reviews.

In May, it was announced by Electronic Arts that the revenue generated by Apex Legends since its launch in 2019 had exceeded $3.4 billion. This information has been brought up again by some players in ongoing debates, stating “EA has earned enough profits from Apex Legends”.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come to expect some grumbling from the community whenever there’s an update. Sometimes a Legend gets nerfed to the point of being unplayable or a popular weapon gets tweaked and taken out of the meta. But this recent change seems to have really riled up everyone. It’s particularly frustrating because it affects those of us who regularly buy battle passes, and now we can no longer purchase them using Apex Coins – a significant shift in gameplay that caught many of us off guard.

In XDefiant and Call of Duty, battle passes have typically been obtainable by exchanging in-game currency, which players can accumulate through prolonged gameplay. This implies that, hypothetically, you could purchase one, finish it, and eventually collect enough currency to buy the succeeding one using coins or tokens.

That’s no longer the case for Apex Legends.

Does this threaten the stability of the Apex esports scene in terms of viewership?
