As a long-time fan of the Call of Duty franchise, I have to admit that I’m feeling a mix of excitement and frustration with the announcement of Season 5 for Modern Warfare 3. On one hand, the new content looks fantastic – from the return of fan-favorite locations in Warzone to the collaboration with WWE, there’s plenty to look forward to.
Yesterday afternoon, Activision unveiled the fresh content in store for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and Warzone Mobile with the arrival of Season 5 towards the end of this month. In store are new multiplayer maps, a beloved reappearance of a Warzone locale, and more, making Season 5 an anticipated addition. However, fans find themselves puzzled once again by the resurrection of a character believed to be deceased.
In the storyline of Modern Warfare 3, Ivan Alexeve disregarded an instruction given by Vladimir Makarov. Consequently, he was mercilessly gunned down by Andrei Nolan who took over from him. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, Ivan is set to make a comeback in Call of Duty through the upcoming Season 5 update, now appearing as a new Operator. A mark on the side of his head – a scar – suggests that Ivan miraculously endured a gunshot wound to the temple.
In simpler terms, the cinematic sequences introduced in each new season for Modern Warfare 3 serve as an extension of the campaign storyline. Consequently, whenever a character apparently comes back to life, this event is accepted as part of the game’s continuity.
Fans were disappointed only a few months ago when yet another deceased character, John “Soap” MacTavish, reappeared in the series, leading them to question if Call of Duty grasps the concept of character deaths. Now, just one season has passed and we’re posing the same query once more.
On X, previously known as Twitter, Modern Warfare 3 fans are expressing their disappointment over Activision’s apparent neglect of the game’s campaign storyline. One user voiced their frustration, stating, “I dislike this aspect of MW2 and MW3. There’s no compelling narrative beyond the campaign like Call of Duty used to provide. They haphazardly bring back deceased characters.”
In a surprising turn of events, Ivan is making a comeback in Call of Duty, defying his supposed demise in Modern Warfare 2 or 3. Previously, Commander Phillip Graves was brought back to life in Modern Warfare 2’s Season 5, and Soap joined the ranks in Modern Warfare 3’s Season 4. Now, Ivan is set to reappear in the upcoming Season 5.
Although there seems to be no concern for maintaining a consistent storyline, Call of Duty’s Season 5 promises an abundance of exciting new content. Expect fresh cell-shaded map designs, innovative gameplay elements, an array of weapons, various modes, and an intriguing WWE collaboration.
