In the Minecraft universe teeming with menacing mobs like creepers, endermen, skeleton archers, zombies, and spiders, players frequently require robust defenses for self-preservation. Yet, when weapons are scarce or quickly succumb to damage, a well-constructed armor suite becomes an essential lifeline, enabling players to fend off monsters until they can safely retreat. Minecraft offers five distinct armor sets, which progressively increase in strength: leather, gold, iron, diamond, and netherite. However, there exists a sixth armor type, elusive chainmail, that is yet to be updated for crafting but is prized for its rarity.

Chainmail’s History and Mechanics in Minecraft

In Minecraft’s initial phase, around 2009, chainmail armor was introduced for the first time. However, it couldn’t be created in Survival Mode using regular crafting methods. Instead, players had to employ cheats or specific commands with fire blocks to manufacture it. This shortcut was eventually removed as part of Update 1.8, also known as the Bountiful Update. In Creative Mode, chainmail armor remains unattainable through conventional means, as no related item exists for crafting. Moreover, there is no chainmail armor designed for horses either, with only leather, gold, iron, and diamond armor options available for them.

In Minecraft, chainmail armor boasts greater protection than leather or gold, yet it is less robust than iron, diamond, and netherite armors. Similar to its real-life counterpart, chainmail armor in the game is engineered to be a lightweight option with some transparency, enabling players to view their own skin beneath. Despite its non-craftability, this armor can be mended using iron ingots on anvils and can even be infused with enchantments to enhance durability. Furthermore, chainmail armor can be melted down in furnaces, producing iron nuggets as a byproduct.

How to Find Chainmail Armor

Obtaining good quality chainmail involves defeating mobs that are already wearing it. However, skeletons and zombies seldom equip or drop their own chainmail armor when slain. Instead, players may obtain stronger pieces of armor from these enemies as a kind of trade-off, allowing them to retrieve the chainmail in return. Additionally, villagers can be traded with emeralds for chainmail, but it’s rather uncommon to find it in chests.

How Mojang Can Expand Upon Chainmail Armor

Chainmail in Minecraft currently stands out due to its unconventional acquisition method, as it can’t be crafted but rather found through challenging means. With the addition of chains in Minecraft Java Edition with Update 1.16 in 2020, Mojang has an opportunity to make chainmail armor craftable using these new items. However, crafting a single chain requires one iron ingot and two iron nuggets, which makes creating a full set of chainmail boots more expensive than a regular set of iron boots for the player in terms of iron consumption. To make chainmail armor production more sensible and save players on iron resources if they decide to craft it with chains, Mojang could alter the chain recipe to call for three iron nuggets instead.

In order to enhance the utility of chainmail armor, Mojang might enable players to combine it with leather armor, thereby increasing the defense points. Historically, knights donned chainmail over or embedded into leather for added protection. Merging the two types of armor could result in a defensive strength of 19 points, making this chainmail-leather combination stronger than iron but less robust than diamond armor. Given that leather is the only armor type in Minecraft that can be dyed, integrating these armor sets could motivate players to use and color their leather armor more frequently within the game.

A complete set of iron armor requires 24 iron ingots for construction. On the other hand, making a full set of chainmail armor with current materials would call for 28 iron ingots and 8 iron nuggets in total.
