The Next God of War Can’t Walk Back Some of the Norse Saga’s Best Additions

The Next God of War Can't Walk Back Some of the Norse Saga's Best Additions

Highlights

  • The next God of War game needs to honor the traditions established by the previous two games while continuing to progress the narrative structure.
  • The progression system established by the last two games should be continued in the next installment to maintain player incentives to progress.
  • Kratos should keep his current arsenal of weapons, including the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear while introducing a brand-new weapon for players.

As a dedicated fan of the God of War series, I strongly believe that the next installment needs to build upon the foundation laid by the last two games while remaining true to the core gameplay mechanics and progression systems that have made this franchise so beloved.

After the Norse saga’s ending in “God of War Ragnarok” and its Valhalla DLC for the “God of War” reboot series, the next installment doesn’t have to abandon the traditions set by the initial games. Although Kratos has left behind his past anguish and Atreus is embarking on a new path, some elements should remain consistent in the upcoming “God of War” game. The narrative may shift, but certain aspects need to stay constant.

As a devoted fan of the God of War series, I can’t deny that the reboot has left an indelible mark on the franchise. It took the once hack-and-slash platformer and turned it into an immersive story-driven adventure, complete with some of the most moving narrative moments in God of War history. The new games have paid homage to the original titles in significant ways, such as Kratos introspecting on his past and the reappearance of his iconic Blades of Chaos. However, we needed something fresh between God of War (2018) and Ragnarok to keep evolving rather than regressing Kratos and Atreus’ journey. The upcoming God of War game must continue in this vein.

The Next God of War Needs to Continue the Progression System Established by the Last Two Games

God of War and God of War Ragnarok Only Added More Weapons to Kratos’ Arsenal

In creating sequels for role-playing and action-adventure games, developers face a complex task: they must recognize the advancement of characters while keeping players engaged with fresh challenges. For instance, as seen in “God of War” (2018) and its upcoming sequel “Ragnarok,” Kratos’ growth includes newfound strength and weapons. To maintain progression while preserving player motivation, these games introduced novel weapons instead of restarting the series from scratch.

As a devoted fan of God of War, I can tell you that in the 2018 masterpiece, I followed Kratos on his journey wielding his renowned Leviathan Axe. This versatile weapon allowed me to engage in both close-quarter and long-range battles, with an added bonus of chilling or slowing down enemies upon impact. Later on, Kratos gained possession of the iconic Blades of Chaos. These weapons not only played a significant role in the narrative but also symbolized his ongoing battle to free himself from the shackles of his past. In God of War Ragnarok, the game builders continued this trend instead of taking away Kratos’ newfound weapons and offering something fresh solely for the sake of progression.

In “God of War Ragnarok,” Kratos retained his Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos. Yet, he acquired the Draupnir Spear later in the game. Unlike his previous weapons, the Draupnir Spear offers a new combat experience. Players can engage in both close-range battles with the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, and long-range engagements using the Draupnir Spear. The spear’s unique feature is that it can stick to enemies and be detonated manually for additional damage.

The Next God of War Should Let Kratos Keep His Current Arsenal and Simply Add Another Weapon to It

As a devoted fan of the God of War series, I strongly believe that in the upcoming game, Kratos should be allowed to retain his trusted weapons – the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, and Draupnir Spear. This way, players can continue to explore the rich narrative and master the combat mechanics they’ve grown accustomed to, without feeling like their progress is being undone.
