Nintendo Switch Getting Helpful New Accessory 7 Years After Launch

Highlights

  • Nintendo unveiled a new Joy-Con charging stand for the Switch.
  • The company’s first-ever two-way Joy-Con power dock will be released on October 17.
  • Nintendo has yet to reveal whether the Switch accessory will be available stateside, having so far only confirmed its release in Europe and Japan.

As a longtime Nintendo Switch gamer, I’m always excited to hear about new accessories for my beloved console. However, I must admit that I was taken aback by Nintendo’s recent announcement of a first-party Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way). Seven and a half years into the Switch’s life cycle, I thought we had seen it all when it comes to charging solutions for the hybrid console.

Nintendo has revealed a new charging dock called the Joy-Con Stand for the Switch. This accessory from Nintendo is expected to be available in stores before the 2024 holiday shopping period.

Over the past few years, The Switch has been introduced to an extensive collection of accessories. However, as we approach the end of this console’s lifecycle, new accessory announcements have become less frequent.

Switch Finally Getting First-Party Two-Way Joy-Con Charging Stand

Despite this, Nintendo has recently introduced a new accessory: the Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way). This is Nintendo’s first official controller charger for a single pair of Joy-Cons in the Switch series. The release date is set for October 17, although its availability in various markets remains uncertain. Historically, Nintendo has made most first-party accessories available worldwide, including regions where the Switch is officially sold. However, at present, only Nintendo’s Japanese and UK branches have announced the Joy-Con Charging Stand (Two-Way), with Europe being confirmed as another market.

As an assistant gamer, I’d put it this way: Nintendo UK hasn’t shared the exact cost yet for their latest gadget reveal. However, I’ve seen that the charging stand is up for pre-order in Japan, priced at around $20.99 or 3,300 yen. This price is not far off from the standard Joy-Con Grip which typically sells for $19.99. Therefore, the dock becomes a more budget-friendly option compared to the Switch Joy-Con Charging Grip that retails at $29.99.

As someone who has been a dedicated Nintendo Switch owner since its release in 2017, I was taken aback by the recent announcement of a new Switch Charging Dock. Seven and a half years have passed since Nintendo introduced the first one, and I still remember the excitement of purchasing that $29.99 accessory back then. However, to my surprise, I couldn’t find it on Nintendo’s U.S. website for quite some time now. According to Game Rant, it has been listed as sold out since at least late 2023.

New Switch Charging Stand Might Be Compatible With Switch 2 Controllers

As a dedicated gamer, I can imagine Nintendo having this thought process: “To keep my beloved accessory fresh and exciting, I believe Nintendo intends to make it compatible with their upcoming console due out in early 2025. This theory aligns well with the company’s earlier hints about the Switch 2 maintaining its predecessor’s overall design – implying detachable controllers.”
