Previous reports and leaks suggested a late 2024 launch for this mid-cycle upgrade to the PlayStation 5. But it seems Sony may not be following this timeline based on new information from within the company.
The PS5 Pro, an anticipated mid-generation upgrade from Sony, is expected to bring significant performance enhancements over the current PS5 model. According to leaked information from Sony’s developer portal, this upgraded console will feature a more powerful GPU based on AMD’s newer RDNA 3 architecture with a capacity of 33.5 teraflops. Additionally, it is rumored to have faster RAM speeds, a 10% quicker CPU, and a new ML-based image upscaler named PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Developers are said to focus on delivering 4K resolution at 60 frames per second for PS5 Pro games, with the potential of achieving 120 frames per second in some titles as well.

With no major first-party blockbusters set for release this year, Sony might prefer to unveil the enhanced capabilities of the PS5 Pro through a high-profile AAA game similar in scope to “Ghost of Tsushima 2” or “Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.” While “Astro Bot” and “LEGO Horizon Adventures” are visually engaging, Sony could aim for a more impactful demonstration of the PS5 Pro’s potential.
Instead, the business could unveil the PS5 Pro and upgraded editions of select games in September. They might still adhere to the predicted autumn 2024 launch date for the console. Sony’s participation as a regular exhibitor at Tokyo Game Show in September has been confirmed. If the PS5 Pro isn’t presented there or around that time, a release in 2025 becomes more plausible.
