Scream 7: Mason Gooding's New Horror Movie Could Mean He'll Return As Chad

Highlights

  • Scream 7 had a major shakeup with a new director and Neve Campbell’s return.
  • Mason Gooding could still be in Scream 7, despite Barrera’s exit.
  • Gooding’s role in “Heart Eyes” for Spyglass may hint at his possible involvement in Scream 7.

As a long-time fan of the Scream franchise, I’ve been following the developments surrounding Scream 7 with great interest. Having grown up watching Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette bring their iconic characters to life, it’s surreal to see the story continue with a new generation of cast members.

After Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega departed from “Scream 7,” and Christopher Landon stepped down as the director, there were significant changes for the upcoming sequel. Neve Campbell then agreed to come back as Sidney Prescott, and Kevin Williamson was revealed as the new director. This development has sparked discussions about Mason Gooding possibly joining “Scream 7” now that the Core Four have disbanded.

I was under the impression that Gooding wouldn’t be coming back for “Scream 7” since Chad Meeks-Martin had stepped in to support Barrera after her dismissal by Spyglass Media. But now, it seems that Gooding has been added to the cast of Spyglass Media’s latest horror project, “Heart Eyes.” This new development opens up the intriguing possibility that he might indeed rejoin the “Scream 7” production, as he continues to foster his professional connection with Spyglass.

I’m thrilled to share that Mason Gooding is teaming up with Spyglass Media once again for the new horror movie, Heart Eyes. This marks his second collaboration with them following Scream (2022) and the upcoming Scream 6. In this chilling tale set in San Francisco on Valentine’s Day, Olivia Holt joins Gooding as two co-workers who get mistaken for a couple by a deranged murderer. With their survival on the line during the most romantic day of the year, they must put aside their differences and work together to escape. Heart Eyes is helmed by Josh Ruben, an accomplished horror comedy director known for Werewolves Within and Scare Me. Christopher Landon, who was initially set to direct Scream 7, co-wrote the script alongside Phillip Murphy and Michael Kennedy.

Josh Ruben released a statement after being hired to direct Heart Eyes:

I have an equal affection for horror and romantic comedies. I’m thrilled beyond belief to create a unique blend of the two genres: a heartwarming romantic comedy setting for a gruesome slasher story.

Jordan Brewster and Devon Sawa have previously been revealed as actors in “Heart Eyes.” They are no novices to the horror genre; Brewster has acted in “The Faculty,” a movie penned by “Scream 7” director Kevin Williamson, while Sawa starred in the initial “Final Destination” released in 2000.

As a gamer, I’ve followed Melissa Barrera’s career closely and was disappointed to hear that she parted ways with Spyglass Media after being let go due to her Pro-Palestine Instagram posts. I fully support Melissa’s stance, but it left me wondering what the feelings of her fellow Core Four co-stars were regarding future collaborations with Spyglass. However, we got a hint when Mason Gooding joined the cast of their upcoming horror comedy, “Heart Eyes.”

There’s speculation that Gooding might collaborate with Spyglass once more, potentially for “Scream 7,” bringing back his character, Chad Meeks-Martin. Fans have expressed reservations about the absence of the Carpenter sisters in “Scream 7,” given their significant impact on the storyline in “Scream 6” as part of the renowned Core Four.

As a fan, I’m thrilled about Chad Gooding’s casting in “Heart Eyes” by Spyglass, but it doesn’t automatically guarantee his return for “Scream 7.” Though the Core Four cast members have shown great camaraderie with each other, no one should risk their career for someone else’s situation. Chad was a beloved character in “Scream (2022)” and “Scream 6,” and it seemed inevitable that he would reappear in “Scream 7.” However, the unexpected turn of events leading to Barrera’s dismissal and Ortega’s exit significantly altered those plans.

If the ownership of the Scream intellectual property were to shift in the future, it would be optimal for the Core Four actors to reunite and conclude the narrative thread that involved their characters. However, at present, Spyglass Media Group holds the franchise rights and is producing a new installment, “Scream 7,” primarily focusing on Sidney Prescott’s storyline. Since Chad didn’t play a significant role in Sidney’s story during “Scream (2022)” or “Scream 6,” it remains to be seen how he fits into the plot of “Scream 7” without the presence of his Core Four colleagues.

It’s possible that an inherited character may appear in the initial death scene of Scream 7, making Chad Meeks-Martin a potential candidate for elimination. Nevertheless, Mason Gooding might be hesitant to join the cast of Scream 7 if his character is slated for an early demise. Since the Core Four are expected to be absent from the film, this could explain why Gooding isn’t part of the announced cast. His absence wouldn’t be due to his reluctance to collaborate with Spyglass Media.
