Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the first brawler Konami made based on the license. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time, a later sequel, is the game that everyone remembers though, and a brawler that many modern games seemingly take inspiration from. It’s easy to see its influences in games like Castle Crashers. Konami and Capcom were two of the biggest names in the brawler scene between the 80s and 90s.
As someone who grew up in the golden age of arcade games, I can attest to Konami’s impressive contributions to the industry. Beyond the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that captured our imaginations, Konami brought us iconic adaptations of The Simpsons and X-Men in the arcades. But their influence didn’t stop there. For over a decade, if not longer, Konami held the rights to the Ninja Turtles outside of the arcade scene. Their impact on my childhood was significant, shaping my love for gaming and leaving an indelible mark on my formative years.

The concept of dancing at home for enjoyment and fitness likely sparked the creation of franchises such as “Just Dance” and “Dance Central.” These innovations surpassed simply following on-screen arrows, offering more. “Dance Dance Revolution” paved the way for music games like “Guitar Hero” to gain popularity. Although it may no longer exist, “Dance Dance Revolution” is not forgotten.
3 Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
It Takes A Vampire To Make A Metroidvania
In 1994, Nintendo refined the Metroid game concept they initiated in 1986 with the release of “Super Metroid.” They enhanced the seamless map design and power-up mechanisms. A few years afterwards, the gaming community was introduced to “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” in the late 90s. This game expanded upon the Metroidvania genre by incorporating role-playing elements. The protagonist, Alucard, gained the ability to advance levels, acquire new abilities, and equip items, among other features.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed an increase in Metroidvania-style games that remind me of classics like Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. These games have more streamlined gameplay mechanics compared to their complex counterparts. Axiom Verge and Shadow Complex are great examples. And let’s not forget about Timespinner and Touhou Luna Nights, which carry on the RPG-infused legacy of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Collectively, these games have left a significant impact on the indie gaming scene.
2 Metal Gear Solid
Storytelling And Stealth Reach A New Level
As someone who grew up in the golden age of video games, I can recall the excitement and anticipation that surrounded the release of Metal Gear Solid back in the late 90s. Looking back now, it’s easy to see that this game wasn’t actually the first entry in the series. There were indeed three titles before it, but only Metal Gear Solid truly captured the world’s imagination.
From the gadgets to the radar system to the Codec messages, there was a lot of innovation from within Konami thanks to Kojima and his crew. More so than anything, Metal Gear Solid upped the level of storytelling on the PS1. This allowed players to get more engaged with the world on a deeper level to fully live as Solid Snake.
1 Silent Hill 2
A Moodier Residence In Horror
I personally found “Silent Hill” to be Konami’s unique take on the horror genre, contrasting “Resident Evil.” Instead of focusing on action and zombies, “Silent Hill” presented itself as a more intricate puzzle game and a chilling psychological thriller. The original game was an impressive demonstration of their concept, but it was the sequel that truly showcased their creativity at its finest.
As a gamer, I can tell you that James Sunderland, the protagonist of “Silent Hill 2,” wasn’t perfect. He had a deep longing to discover the truth about his wife, but something felt off-balance in the narrative. The game didn’t shy away from letting players experience failures along with successes. Looking back without revealing spoilers, I believe this approach was incredibly beneficial for me as a player, and it significantly contributed to the evolution of the horror genre. Games like “Amnesia: The Dark Descent” and “Outlast” emerged, following in the footsteps of “Silent Hill 2,” offering immersive experiences filled with suspense and fear that left an indelible mark on the industry.
