As a long-time fan of Hunt: Showdown, I’m thrilled to hear about the upcoming next-gen update, which is now officially rated M for Mature by the ESRB. The Victorian era setting and monster hunting gameplay have always captivated me, and I can’t wait to experience it in even higher definition and with improved performance on my PlayStation 5 or PC.
The ESRB site now assigns an M rating to Hunt: Showdown (by Crytek) on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
Showdown is described as a “monster hunting game set in a fantastical Victorian era, experienced from the first-person perspective.”
An upcoming free modification for Hunt: Showdown, announced by Crytek in a press release on August 15, 2024, is more likely what the ESRB update alludes to, as opposed to a new game title in the series.
Based on my experience working in the video game industry, I believe that adding “1896” to a game title might initially give the impression of a historical or vintage game. However, aligning this timeline with the new ESRB rating suggests that this could be an updated version of an existing game, possibly intended for next-gen consoles. Given my background, I’ve seen similar situations where older titles receive upgrades to run on newer systems, so it appears that the next-gen update is still on schedule according to this information.
Hunt: Showdown, an open world shooter by Crytek, debuted on Steam in August 2019 and received mainly favorable reviews. It was part of a trend featuring over a dozen extraction-style shooters in development.)
After undergoing its next-generation upgrade, Hunt: Showdown will no longer be compatible with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. According to Crytek, the update brings a “new map, CRYENGINE version 5.11, performance enhancements,” an updated user interface, and additional features.
More recently, Crytek unveiled the From the Wilds expansion for Hunt: Showdown on June 27, 2024. Despite this, the expansion has received mainly unfavorable feedback from players, possibly as a result of recurring technical problems reported by many. The update introduced new Hunter types, weapons, and other features.
