Star Wars Eclipse and the KOTOR Remake Are in the Same Boat

Star Wars Eclipse and the KOTOR Remake Are in the Same Boat

As a hardcore gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of anticipated video game projects that have hit rough waters during development. And it’s disheartening to see two highly-anticipated Star Wars projects, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake and Star Wars Eclipse, facing similar challenges.

Although Star Wars turned 50 not too long ago, this iconic Sci-Fi franchise continues to capture the hearts of people all around the world. Given its enduring popularity, numerous video game adaptations are underway. In about a month, players can look forward to Ubisoft’s open-world Star Wars game, called Star Wars Outlaws. Progress is being made on BitReactor and Respawn’s Star Wars strategy title, while Amy Hennig’s action-adventure project remains in development. Additionally, rumors suggest that Creative Assembly might be developing a Total War: Star Wars game.

Among the ongoing Star Wars development projects, none create as much excitement as the anticipated remake of Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Eclipse. The former plans to rebuild one of the most cherished Star Wars games from scratch, while the latter offers a mature, narrative-driven experience spearheaded by an esteemed developer. However, both highly-anticipated projects appear to share the same predicament: they’re facing troubled waters in their development process.

Star Wars KOTOR Remake and Eclipse Are in the Same Shaky Boat Right Now

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Could Be in Development Hell

Since as early as 2021, the development process for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has faced numerous challenges. Initially, Aspyr Media, known for their previous Star Wars remasters and ports, was in charge of the project. However, according to a Bloomberg report from August 2022, Lucasfilm and Sony were disappointed with the progress made by Aspyr on the game. After evaluating a demo version, the remake was put on hold, and Aspyr’s involvement came to an end.

In a more recent report from Bloomberg, there were whispers that Saber Interactive would be assuming control over the development of “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” Remake. Previously, there had been some doubt regarding this project’s progress. However, in an interview with IGN conducted in April 2023, Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch, confirmed that his team was now working on the game and it was reportedly making good progress. Despite this reassuring news, fans remain cautiously optimistic as they eagerly await the opportunity to play the remake, which could still be several years away.

Star Wars Eclipse Has Gone Radio Silent

Back in December 2021, it was revealed that “Star Wars Eclipse” was facing some challenges in its development. Shortly after being announced, “Star Wars Eclipse” gained significant attention due to the controversies surrounding its developer, Quantic Dream. Accusations of a toxic workplace environment and offensive language used by the company’s founder, David Cage, led to discussions about potential boycotts from fans. Such boycotts could potentially impact “Star Wars Eclipse” once it is released. Additionally, reports have emerged suggesting that the game’s development has been delayed due to staffing shortages.

The latest update on the progress of “Star Wars Eclipse” from Quantic Dream was given in September of last year by their Vice President of Marketing, Lisa Pendse, who stated that the game is still in existence. Similar to the “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake,” it appears that we won’t be hearing much about “Star Wars Eclipse” for a while, and it’s highly uncertain if the game will be released within the next few years.
