A Mortal Kombat Game is Shutting Down Forever

Highlights

  • Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down after just one year, disappointing fans of the action-adventure game.
  • NetherRealm’s mobile team was recently dissolved.
  • No plans to shut down Mortal Kombat Mobile have been announced yet.

As a long-time Mortal Kombat fan, I’m deeply saddened by the news that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down. I’ve been following the franchise since the early days of the original games and have always looked forward to new releases, whether they be console titles or mobile games.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down just one year after its release. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is an action-adventure beat ’em up game released for mobile devices in October 2023. The game launched just one month after Mortal Kombat 1, and eight years after the previous MK mobile game, the aptly-named Mortal Kombat Mobile.

The mobile version of “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught,” which was created by NetherRealm’s team dedicated to mobile games, may have been affected by recent layoffs at the studio. Unfortunately, NetherRealm had to close down their mobile division, leading to speculation that this could be the reason behind the termination of “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.” However, a definitive explanation for the game’s shutdown has not been provided yet.

The date when the Mortal Kombat: Onslaught mobile game will be taken offline has not been revealed yet, but it’s been confirmed that it will happen in October of this year. This may not be the most pressing concern for console-focused Mortal Kombat fans, but the announcement is still disappointing news for the community as a whole.

When is Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Shutting Down?

  • October 2024

Mortal Kombat fans on mobile will be the most disappointed about Mortal Kombat: Onslaught shutting down, but they will still have Mortal Kombat Mobile to play in the meantime. Whereas Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a beat ’em up, Mortal Kombat Mobile is a more traditional fighting game. It basically tries to translate a traditional Mortal Kombat fighting game experience to iOS and Android. Mortal Kombat Mobile is still getting new content, with Spawn recently added to the roster. Spawn was previously featured in Mortal Kombat 11 as one of that game’s guest characters.

After the layoffs at NetherRealm, there’s uncertainty about how much further development Mortal Kombat Mobile will receive. With a substantial player base, keeping the game running seems necessary. In contrast, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, unfortunately, may not be so lucky. It’s plausible that NetherRealm might continue enhancing Mortal Kombat Mobile by introducing new playable characters, but the studio could instead concentrate on other projects.

As a passionate gamer, I’m eagerly waiting for NetherRealm’s next announcement. But right now, they’re fully focused on creating Mortal Kombat 1, which is keeping them pretty busy. They’ve even given us a hint that we might get some exciting updates about Kombat Pack 2 during San Diego Comic Con on July 26.
