INTERVIEW: Esports World Cup CEO on the Future of the Industry

As a dedicated fan of esports and someone who has closely followed the industry’s growth over the past few years, I was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to interview Ralf Reichert, the visionary CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation. His insights into the future of esports and the Esports World Cup were nothing short of inspiring.

In Riyadh, the Esports World Cup is unfolding with an unprecedented number of games showcased on a grand stage. Teams from every corner of the globe are making their way to Saudi Arabia in pursuit of millions of dollars in winnings. Although several titles have already been claimed, some of the most eagerly awaited competitions are still to come.

Lately, I got the chance to sit down with Ralf Reichert, the big boss at Esports World Cup Foundation. I fired away with some important queries regarding the industry’s future and the Esports World Cup specifically.

Read on to see what Reichert had to say.

‘We’ve Set a New Standard’

It’s common knowledge that Saudi Arabia made a grand entrance in the Esports World Cup. The spectacular opening ceremony and the nearly two dozen games held there set a new standard in esports history, surpassing anything that came before. I was curious to know how Ralf Reichert and his team intend to outdo this impressive display in upcoming events.

Based on my extensive experience in organizing large-scale events, I can’t reveal all the details just yet about what attendees can anticipate at our upcoming events. However, I want to assure you that our dedication to creating an exceptional celebration of competition and gaming culture for our worldwide fans remains unwavering. We have set a high bar, and it is our responsibility to surpass it each time we stage an event. With each new gathering, we aim to raise the stakes and deliver an unforgettable experience that showcases the very best of competitive spirit and gaming culture. My personal commitment is to ensure that every attendee feels valued, engaged, and leaves with lasting memories. Our events are more than just competitions; they are a testament to the power of community and the passion that drives us all.

The elements outlined here are in alignment with Vision 2030, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s proactive approach that welcomes the Esports World Cup beautifully. This forward-thinking mindset instills confidence in me regarding the promising future of gaming and esports not just in Saudi Arabia but also across the MENA region.

One major issue raised prior to the Esports World Cup commencing in Saudi Arabia was the country itself as a host location. After the tournament began, the EWC organizers emphasized that all are welcome. However, skepticism persists within the gaming community regarding this statement due to Saudi Arabia’s past record of discrimination against minorities and the LGBTQ+ community. This was an essential matter for Reichert to address.

At the Esports World Cup, everyone is invited, and we’ve put in great effort to ensure a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Here, gamers from every corner of the globe can gather and express their love for gaming together.

We aimed for an exciting and festive vibe for this grand event, and I strongly recommend gaming and esports enthusiasts to join us. Attend a tournament, groove to one of the many concerts, explore the festival, and soak up the unique atmosphere. I’m confident that once you’ve been here, your perspective will shift.

Previously, Reichert had assured there would be no discrimination, yet he recommended conforming to community customs and “unspoken rules” regarding personal preferences.

‘Gaming Isn’t Going Anywhere’

Inquiring about the future developments of the esports and gaming sectors, I sought Ralf Reichert’s insights. The past 18 months have posed significant challenges for the games industry, resulting in mass layoffs affecting employees globally and numerous studios shutting down suddenly. The esports industry has experienced its own set of hardships alongside it.

I’m strongly belief that the future of esports and gaming holds great promise. It transcends geographical, age, gender, and cultural boundaries to unite individuals from all walks of life. Furthermore, due to gaming’s widespread appeal, esports has emerged as a globally popular and in-demand sport with an incredible growth rate.

Having spent years immersed in the dynamic world of gaming, I’ve witnessed firsthand the meteoric rise of esports and its transformative impact on popular culture. The esports scene is no longer a niche pastime for tech-savvy individuals; it’s becoming a global phenomenon where competitors command massive followings and influence.

To conclude, I discussed the unique structure of the Esports World Cup, with a focus on its frequency. For a long time, I’ve pondered over why this tournament isn’t held less frequently, like the FIFA World Cup. Reichert provided some insight into the reasoning behind it:

During the planning stage, we considered various formats for the Esports World Cup. We drew ideas from renowned international sports events but decided that an annual Esports World Cup would be most suitable. The dynamic world of video games and the digital age move at a faster pace than traditional sports, making an annual event more fitting.

As a passionate gamer, I’m excited to share that my team and I are on a mission to create an exceptional platform where esports clubs can shine every year. Our goal is to make it a prestigious moment for both players and fans, something they’ll aspire to be a part of. The format isn’t set in stone yet, but we’re pleased with how the Esports World Championship (EWC) is progressing so far.

As an esports fan, I’m excited to share that the World Cup is far from over! The competition will carry on until the last game concludes on August 25th. Before we reach the finish line, we’ll witness the Club Championship trophy being presented. Right now, it seems like Team Falcons is in a strong position to take home the enormous, million-dollar prize during that event.

Having attended numerous esports events throughout the years, I can confidently say that this latest exhibition has left me utterly amazed. The level of production quality and organization surpasses anything I have seen before in the esports scene. It’s an exhilarating experience to witness history being made right before my eyes. As someone who has been following and participating in this community for quite some time, it’ll be fascinating to observe how this event continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of esports.
