As a long-time fan of My Hero Academia, I’ve been following Bakugou’s character development with bated breath since the very beginning. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, watching him transform from an arrogant, hotheaded student at U.A. High School into a formidable hero who, in the latest episode, managed to challenge Shigaraki in a way none of us thought possible.

Caution: This section reveals significant plot points from episode 149 of My Hero Academia, titled “Light Fades to Rain,” which is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.

Bakugo hasn’t always been the easiest character to like; he was a bully, his personality was trash, and the subtleties of his development over six seasons were too little, too late for some. Speaking personally, there were times I couldn’t stand him, but perhaps it’s because of that arduous journey with him that the latest episode of My Hero Academia is one of its most emotional in years.

In last week’s episode, Bakugo and Endeavor took center stage with their bold and intense assaults against Shigaraki and All for One. We highly appreciated this episode as it showcased these complex characters’ development and determination in spite of their imperfections. However, it looks like Bakugo’s moment in the limelight is far from over.

Please Protect Bakugo

In this rendition, as Bakugo’s Howitzer Impact is neutralized and his arm is shattered, Shigaraki discloses his intentions for him. The malevolent mastermind intends to display the remains of Deku’s closest friend as a provocation, aiming to ignite in the hero an intense fury similar to what he witnessed when Bakugo was stabbed during Season 6. Initially, this installment focuses on the efforts of the remaining heroes to safeguard Bakugo, with a familiar face making a reappearance.

Lemillion is Here (To Do The Bare Minimum)

Bakugo Will NOT Give up in This Weeks My Hero Academia

I’ve been following My Hero Academia for quite some time now, and I must admit that Mirio, also known as Lemillion, used to be one of my favorite characters. He was the epitome of a cool and admirable hero, a natural leader, and someone who truly embodied the spirit of being a Pro Hero. However, as we progressed through the seasons, it seems that his role in the story has significantly diminished.

One of the most heart-wrenching moments in Season 4 was when one character lost his unique ability, looking back, it seems that keeping it might have been best for the storyline. It appears that Horikoshi aimed to reintroduce this character to appease fans but struggled to effectively incorporate him into the climax. Consequently, he serves more as a source of encouragement than an active participant, only able to inflict damage on Shigaraki when enhanced by Nejire’s shockwaves. To put it another way, the loss of his quirk in Season 4 was a significant misfortune, and in retrospect, perhaps it would have been better if he hadn’t regained it for the story’s conclusion.

U.A.’s Big Three Versus Shigaraki

Mirio is widely adored, but this episode highlights the awesome qualities of U.A.’s other “Big Three” members. Previously, we examined the team tasked with the Coffin in the Sky mission, and Suneater’s quirk stood out as a serious threat to Shigaraki. With Nejire’s assistance, he merges animals he’s consumed to make an unexpected weapon: a plasma cannon.

The Big Three delivered an breathtakingly beautiful attack this season, with Suneater’s contribution making it truly extraordinary. Their combined effort was almost impossible without him, leaving us in awe each time he graced our screens. However, despite their best efforts and what seemed like a game-changing blow, the outcome fell short when Shigaraki spoke up through the dust – reasons for this failure soon became clear.

Think about it! Would Golden Age All Might have died from something like this?

As someone who has followed the My Hero Academia series closely, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of unease and sadness upon witnessing Shigaraki’s declaration of equality with All Might in Episode 148. Having grown up idolizing All Might as a symbol of heroism and strength, Bakugo, in particular, is hit the hardest by this revelation.

Bakugo’s Despair/Awakening

As someone who has been following the My Hero Academia series avidly for years, I must say that this recent episode truly took my breath away. Just when I thought we had reached the pinnacle of excitement with Suneater’s plasma cannon attack, the scene managed to outdo itself once more. And it was none other than Bakugo who delivered this jaw-dropping moment.

Instead of “Bakugo has always been far smarter than what his archetype might suggest,” you could say “Despite being known for a certain type of character, Bakugo has shown himself to be exceptionally intelligent.” And instead of “he mirrors Deku in numerous ways here – more than ever,” you could say “His actions and strategies now closely resemble Deku’s.” For the last sentence, consider “Instead of letting his pride cloud his judgment as he once did, Bakugo calls out to Deku for validation.”

In this pivotal moment, a character’s central message becomes crystal clear, and the impact of six seasons of development is palpable in each gesture and dialogue. Yuki Hayashi’s music score impressively amplifies the scene’s intensity, while the visuals deliver powerful emotional blows through subtle cues. The concerned expressions of other heroes add to the emotional depth, most notably Best Jeanist.

A Revelation Seven Seasons in the Making

An unexpected moment of emotional vulnerability for Bakugo comes when he imagines a heartfelt conversation with All Might. In this imagined scenario, Bakugo sets aside his tough exterior and reveals his deep admiration for the iconic hero. His feelings of pride, insecurity, and ambition to surpass Izuku are all laid bare. Despite his exposed vulnerability, Bakugo’s strength shines brighter than ever before, offering a powerful and poignant display of his character.

It’s one of the most glorious moments since All Might fought All for One…

In the climactic moment of the episode, Bakugo’s intense assault ignites fury within Shigaraki yet simultaneously galvanizes the other heroes to act boldly, their earlier hesitation replaced with determination. This scene recalls the epic battle between All Might and All for One, leaving an indelible mark. The emotional impact was profound, striking a chord with fans who have largely avoided spoilers from the manga, and the upcoming episodes promise no less turmoil for the heart.

Previously, I used to feel like a half-baked attempt at a complex character in “My Hero Academia.” Fans would argue that my arc was well-rounded, but my aggression remained grating. However, this latest episode has made me wonder if the frustration was all worth it to witness such an incredible transformation. It’s true that many characters are more likable, but none can elicit the awe and appreciation from an audience like I can.
