As a long-time gamer and avid fan of the crossover fighting genre, I’m beyond thrilled by the recent developments surrounding the potential return of Marvel vs. Capcom. The release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was a breath of fresh air for me and many other fans who had grown tired of waiting for a new installment in the series.

Shuhei Matsumoto, producer of both “Street Fighter 6” and “Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection – Arcade Classics,” recently shared insights about the potential future of the crossover fighting series. In June, Capcom drew significant attention to the “Marvel vs. Capcom” franchise with the announcement of a compilation, which included seven classic games and made their first appearance on contemporary platforms since their original release. This collection was a major triumph for fighting game enthusiasts.

Many fans expressed their excitement on social media about the return of “Marvel vs. Capcom,” a series that had appeared to fade from public view outside of the dedicated fighting game community. This perception was largely due to the divisive reception of “Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite” in 2017, which faced development challenges and was criticized for being a step back from the excellence of “Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3,” despite maintaining its impressive gameplay. With the success of “Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics,” there are rumors that a new installment in the series might be under development, a possibility hinted at by producer Shuhei Matsumoto.

In an interview with Dexerto, Shuhei Matsumoto shared insights on the potential future of the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. He expressed Capcom’s ambitious plans and mentioned a possibility of a new Marvel vs. Capcom or SNK-themed Capcom game. However, creating a new installment would require significant investment of time and resources. A shorter-term solution, according to Matsumoto, could be re-releasing the classic games to introduce them to a newer audience and demonstrate Capcom’s dedication to the franchise.

Both Marvel and Capcom Wanted to Revive the Crossover Series

Matsumoto revealed that Capcom and Marvel had been discussing the idea of reviving this collection for several years, but it ultimately depended on the right moment. Marvel was eager to breathe new life into “Marvel vs. Capcom” through the “Fighting Collection” re-release since they were observing popular fighting game tournaments, such as EVO and smaller events, featuring “Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.” Regarding the possibility of a rollback netcode update for “UMvC3,” Matsumoto stated that they harbored grand aspirations and were moving forward incrementally.

Matsumoto expresses that creating crossover games such as these is a grand ambition of his. With the recent unexpected release of “SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos” on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, the prospects for new installments in this genre have significantly increased. Originally developed by SNK, this crossover fighting game between the two companies was enhanced with rollback netcode upon its return. It remains to be seen, but the possibility of future Capcom crossover fighting games appears more promising than before.
