The Last of Us 2 Player’s Permadeath Run Gets Ruined in One of the Safest Areas of the Game

The Last of Us 2 Player's Permadeath Run Gets Ruined in One of the Safest Areas of the Game

Highlights

  • One player encountered a glitch at the very start of a Permadeath run in The Last of Us Part 2, ending his game unexpectedly.
  • The game’s Permadeath mode removes saves and checkpoints, forcing players to restart from the beginning if either Abby or Ellie die.

As a dedicated gamer with countless hours invested in various titles, I’ve encountered my fair share of bugs and glitches throughout my gaming journey. However, none have been as infuriating and disappointing as the one that recently ruined my Permadeath run in The Last of Us Part 2.

Years after being released, “The Last of Us Part 2” continues to encounter some issues, including a persistent bug that disrupts players’ attempts at Permadeath mode during their playthrough. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the Seraphites or the Infected that caused one player’s dream run to end prematurely; instead, it was Jackson, which is typically considered a safe zone in “The Last of Us 2.”

In the new feature of Grounded Mode called Permadeath, there is no saving of game progress or checkpoints. Consequently, if the characters Abby or Ellie perish during gameplay, the player has to start over from the beginning. Yet, players can establish Permadeath checkpoints on a chapter or act level, lessening the pressure while preserving the challenge of a Permadeath playthrough. Nevertheless, even seasoned speedrunners may not be ready for the unexpected bugs in The Last of Us Part 2.

Reddit user boi_flippy posted a 40-second clip from the beginning of “The Last of Us Part 2” in Jackson, where Ellie goes to meet Maria at the Tipsy Bison bar. Normally, Ellie would talk to Maria about the previous night’s events. However, during this Permadeath run, the bar was empty and Maria’s model appeared frozen. As Ellie approached, she glitched through the floor, resulting in her death and restarting the entire opening sequence. While not as frightening as Dina turning into a backpack, repeatedly playing the snowball fight from “The Last of Us Part 2” can be quite tedious.

The Last of Us Part 2 Glitch Ruins Permadeath Run

During a Permadeath playthrough, “The Last of Us Part 2” showcases several issues, such as falling through the floor and dying in the midst of cutscenes. A Reddit post highlights numerous bugs found in the game, including missing PlayStation trophies, Ellie inexplicably flying across maps, and absent enemy dialogue in specific scenes. The extent to which Naughty Dog has tackled these bugs is uncertain, and with other projects underway, it seems the “Last of Us” series may not be a current focus for the developers.

Restarting a chapter in “The Last of Us Part 2” might be an inconvenience, but it doesn’t spoil the story for us. However, there’s a known issue where Ellie’s journal entries get erased, which significantly impacts the player experience. Some fans argue that the PC version of “The Last of Us” exposes the series’ weaknesses, but even the most praised games carry their share of bugs and glitches.
