With only a little over two weeks left until the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, excitement is incredibly high for any remaining Mega Evolutions. Nintendo made a good decision by showing off Mega Chesnaught, Mega Delphox, and Mega Greninja. Giving more Mega Evolutions to Pokemon from Gen 6 was definitely deserved, especially for the starters from Pokemon X and Y, considering the negative reaction fans had years ago when they didn’t receive them. The leaked Mega Evolutions for Pokemon Legends: Z-A are practically confirmed – this has been true since Mega Dragonite was revealed – but, as usual, The Pokemon Company hasn’t officially revealed the Mega Evolutions for the three starter Pokemon.
I’ve noticed this happening for ages now – game developers love keeping secrets! With the newest Pokemon games, like Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, they totally held back on showing us the new forms or final evolutions of the starter Pokemon until the games actually launched. It’s a pretty common tactic, and I’m kind of used to it at this point.
Since the game doesn’t seem to introduce any brand-new Pokémon, it’s good to see Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig chosen as starters in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, although details about their Mega Evolutions are still scarce. Descriptions of PLZA‘s Mega Feraligatr and Meganium are appearing online-the latter was partially revealed in a blurry image-and both of them gain a new type. Mega Emboar doesn’t seem to be following suit, and it might not be as impressive.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Emboar May Be a Mixed Bag

So, all those leaks we’ve been seeing? They’re spot on! Apparently, Mega Meganium is going to be a Grass/Fairy type, Mega Feraligatr will be Water/Dragon, and Mega Emboar is sticking with Fire/Fighting. Honestly, that typing for Emboar doesn’t really excite me. It’s the same as regular Emboar, and it means it’s super effective against a lot of types that are already pretty weak in the game. It doesn’t really give the critter much of an edge, if you ask me.
Mega Emboar’s Battle Capabilities in Pokemon Legends: Z-A Explained
Pokemon | Type Combo | Defensive | Offensive |
Mega Meganium | Grass/Fairy | Weak to: Poison (4x), Flying, Steel, Fire, Ice (2x) Resist: Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Electric, Dark (0.5x), Dragon (0x) | Strong against: Fighting, Ground, Rock, Water, Dragon, Dark (2x) Weak against: Poison, Steel, Fire (0.5x) |
Mega Feraligatr | Water /Dragon | Weak to: Dragon, Fairy (2x) Resist: Steel (0.5x), Fire, Water (0.25x) | Strong against: Ground, Rock, Fire, Dragon (2x) Weak against: N/A |
Mega Emboar | Fire/Fighting | Weak to: Flying, Ground, Water, Psychic (2x) Resist: Steel, Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark (0.5x), Bug (0.25x) | Strong against: Normal, Rock, Bug, Steel, Grass, Ice, Dark (2x) Weak against: N/A |
As a result, although Mega Emboar can defend itself reasonably well, it doesn’t have much offensive power with its STAB Pokemon moves, considering that types like Normal, Rock, Bug, Grass, and Ice are generally the least effective. A different type might have been more helpful for this Gen 5 Pokemon, but it doesn’t look like that will happen.
PLZA’s Mega Emboar Has a Glaring Weakness Feraligatr and Meganium Don’t
Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Emboar is reportedly quite similar to the original Pokemon, but with added armor and more detailed flames around its head. The design is said to look like a Chinese warrior. According to Centro Leaks, it also wields a spear made entirely of fire, which is a particularly impressive feature.
However, Mega Emboar might be at a significant disadvantage-like bringing a knife to a gunfight-when facing the leaked Mega Zygarde. Mega Zygarde not only has a type advantage and much stronger stats, but it also wields a large weapon that looks like a rocket or even a nuclear missile. Given that Mega Zygarde will likely be central to the story in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Mega Emboar might not be the ideal Pokemon to challenge it. In contrast, both Mega Feraligatr and Mega Meganium can deal double damage to it.
