As a huge fan of One Piece, I was beyond excited when Netflix announced its live-action adaptation of this iconic anime and manga series. The casting choices alone were enough to get me hooked, with Jamie Lee Curtis’s potential involvement as Doctor Kureha adding an extra layer of excitement. Having grown up reading the manga and watching the anime, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation at the prospect of seeing these beloved characters brought to life on screen.

In the first season of “One Piece” on Netflix, the live-action version generated significant buzz, largely attributable to its excellent acting selections and commendable performances. Regrettably, an equally suitable casting decision won’t carry over to the series for its upcoming second season.

Since its debut, One Piece has stood out as a dominant force in Japanese anime and manga, setting records and earning the title of most enduring member of the prestigious “big three” shounen manga series of the 21st century. Unlike its peers, One Piece continues to be highly regarded by critics and audiences alike, maintaining its position as one of the top-rated shonen manga/anime franchises in the present day. Remarkably, despite its impressive legacy, a live-action adaptation had yet to materialize until Netflix took on the project, premiering it in August 2023.

Fans had long anticipated Jamie Lee Curtis’ involvement as Doctor Kureha in the second season of the show, given her expressed interest and the producers’ enthusiasm for her casting. However, unfortunately for fans, Curtis won’t be joining the cast for the upcoming season. During an interview with Deadline, Tomorrow Studios’ CEO Marty Adelstein and President Becky Clements confirmed that despite Curtis’ genuine interest, she won’t be able to appear in the show.

She’s deeply fond of the program, but unfortunately, her schedule is packed with film and TV projects that are set to begin production. As a result, our proposed production timeline isn’t feasible for her. Despite her strong desire to be involved, she currently has priority commitments in place, making things rather intricate.

Although the creators of One Piece initially gave fans reason to believe that Doctor Kureha might still be a possibility for the second season, recent statements suggest otherwise. During a Q&A session, executives confirmed that they had already cast the role and introduced an “amazing person” into the production team. Additionally, they expressed their intention to continue working on the show for at least six seasons due to the abundant source material from the One Piece manga, which currently consists of over 1,000 chapters.

In simple terms, the choice of actors in the live-action version of “One Piece” is one of its major advantages, with the initial cast choices receiving high praise from the series creator Oda Eiichiro before the show’s premiere. Although Curtis seemed perfect for the role of Doctor Kureha based on her demographics and acting abilities, scheduling conflicts and previous commitments are common issues in large-scale productions like “One Piece.” Ultimately, whoever lands the part of Kureha is expected to deliver a solid performance, but may be overshadowed by the introduction of Chopper within the same storyline.

Though there are a few areas where “One Piece” could still enhance its presentation before the start of its second season, the series exudes a sense of hopefulness and enthusiasm that’s rarely seen in live-action adaptations. With the announcement of a second season only two weeks after the first one premiered, it’s evident that the production team is in high spirits as well. Fingers crossed, fans may be in for the complete six-season journey.

One Piece is available to stream on Netflix, with a second season on the way.
