Highlights
- Skull and Bones is coming to Steam on August 22.
- Previously, the game was available to PC players on the Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, and Amazon Luna.
As a long-time gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen Ubisoft’s rollercoaster ride with Skull and Bones since its announcement back in 2017. The game was initially promised as an Assassin’s Creed spin-off but eventually became a standalone pirate adventure title. With a development history dating back to 2013, the anticipation for this game grew exponentially, only to be met with lukewarm reception upon release in early 2024.
Ubisoft has announced that starting August 22, you’ll be able to find “Skull and Bones” on Steam for purchase. The game initially debuted on PC through Epic Store, Ubisoft Connect, and Amazon Luna in its release, and now Steam users can save it to their wishlist before its upcoming availability.
Skull and Bones was one of Ubisoft’s big promises in recent years. Initially intended as a spin-off of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, it soon became a standalone title. Skull and Bones began development in 2013 and was announced in 2017, with a release date set for 2018. After numerous delays, trailers, and buzzwords like “the world’s first quadruple-A game,” Skull and Bones was finally released to a lukewarm reception. Many players compared the pirate-themed game to Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, the original inspiration. Ironically, after Skull and Bones was released, Black Flag saw an exponential increase in its player base.
Ubisoft is broadening the accessibility of its games by making them available on Steam following their initial sale on Ubisoft’s store. According to a tweet, Skull and Bones will debut on Steam on August 22. The game now has a listing on Steam for those who wish to save it to their wishlist. The cost hasn’t been revealed yet, but given the trend with other platforms, it’s expected that Skull and Bones will be priced around $70 on Steam.
When is the Skull and Bones Steam Release Date?
- Skull and Bones will launch on Steam on August 22.
Ubisoft’s game “Skull and Bones,” initially launched in February 2024, will be available on Steam only half a year later. This marks a shortening trend for the time it takes Ubisoft games to reach Steam. From 2019 to 2022, Ubisoft halted releasing games on Steam. However, towards the end of 2022, they returned with “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla,” which originally came out in 2020. Since then, not all Ubisoft titles have debuted on Steam simultaneously, but some have eventually appeared.
About a week after its debut, it’s reported that “Skull and Bones” boasted over 850,000 players in total, with both buyers and free trial users included. Upon its arrival on Steam, the game’s player base can be monitored via sites like SteamDB. Ubisoft has announced that a new season for the game will drop every three months. Season 2 commenced on May 28, while Season 3 of “Skull and Bones” is anticipated to debut sometime between September and October.
