As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent exploring the vast worlds of RPGs, NieR: Automata holds a special place in my heart for its unique blend of storytelling and customization. The game’s post-apocalyptic setting and the ongoing war between Androids and machines drew me in from the beginning.
In the distant future, I’m immersed in the captivating world of NieR: Automata. Humanity is long gone, and now Androids are engaged in a relentless battle against machines. As a devoted fan, I get to experience this narrative through the perspectives of three distinct Androids: 2B, 9S, and A2. Along their journey, I have the freedom to personalize their looks by swapping outfits, experimenting with hair dyes, and even customizing the skins of their companion Pods.
In NieR: Automata, the way your character looks with different outfits and accessories is just for aesthetics and doesn’t affect their abilities or stats. This allows players to personalize their characters according to their preferences. Previously, some items were only available as DLC or pre-order bonuses, but they have since been made available in regular game releases. Additionally, The End of YoRHa Edition for the Nintendo Switch comes with exclusive outfits among other content.
How to Change Outfits in NieR Automata
by finishing side missions, buying them from stores, or collecting them along the way. For instance, the Pink and Blue ribbons are rewards given to the player upon completing the side mission called “Lost Girl.” This mission becomes accessible once you have finished the main quest named “Machine Trade.”
Alternatively, obtaining some items may prove more difficult. For instance, finishing the “Emil’s Memories” mission requires players to traverse the map several times in search of Lunar Tears, a significant flower from Emil’s past that connects back to the initial NieR game.
Enhancing this bond are the Colosseum battles where players can acquire outfits resembling the main characters from the initial installment. However, be warned, these combat encounters are challenging and it’s advisable for players to reach level 80 or higher before engaging in them. Additionally, 2B and 9S both obtain heavy armor as rewards, but this perk is only accessible once the game has been completed three times and the credits have been viewed.
Once obtained, players can modify their appearance by navigating to the Key Items section in the menu, choosing their preferred cosmetic item, and clicking “equip” to apply the changes. This applies to costumes, accessories, hair dyes, Pod skins, and models.
Over time, clothes may look worn out when players get hurt. However, you can prevent this by buying a Dress Upgrade from Emil, who sets up shop in the ruins once players find him for the first time. The items Emil offers depend on where players encounter his traveling market. If you meet him outside the Resistance Camp, you can buy the Dress Upgrade there. To put on new costumes or outfits:
- Press start or options to pause the game.
- Select Key Items
- Select the desired outfits and accessories.
- A privacy sheet will appear and the protagonist will change their appearance.
Unlock The Outfits Early In Nier: Automata
Due to a hidden trick in “Nier: Automata,” uncovered by modder Lance “manfightdragon” McDonald three years post-release, this secret was later authenticated as the game’s ultimate mystery by Yoko Taro. By employing this trick, players can access all chapters, costumes, accessories, and a debug mode prematurely. To enable the cheat, follow these steps:
- After defeating the Marx and talking to 9S during the “Inside the Factory” prologue mission.
- Have 2B stand between the two barrels in the now-empty boss room.
Don’t leave the area, as leaving will void your only opportunity to activate the cheat.
- With 2B standing between the barrels activate the cheat using the following inputs:
On the PlayStation: Hold R2 then up, down, up, right, left, Square, Circle, Triangle, and Cross.
On the Xbox: Hold RT, then up, down, up, right, left, X, B, Y, and A.
- The game jumps to the end and activates the items, accessories, armor, and the chapter selection feature.
As a gamer, I always make sure to save my progress in the game. This way, I can go back and play previous sections with unlocked items or even start over from the beginning if I want to experience different outcomes.
