I first got into the God of War series way back when it launched on the PS2 in 2005. For years after that, PlayStation fans like me were constantly getting new Kratos content – whether it was sequels, spin-offs, or remasters. Things quieted down for a bit, but then the reboot dropped in 2018 and it was amazing! It was so clear that people were still craving those really intense, brutal combat systems paired with these incredible, fantastical worlds. It really delivered!
Players were looking for compelling narratives – stories that were both emotionally moving and incredibly exciting. While we wait for the next God of War installment – the release date is still unknown – here are some new, intense action games that should satisfy fans of the series.
Marvel’s Wolverine
The Claws Are Out

- Planned Release Date: Fall 2026
- Expected Platform: PS5
Marvel’s Wolverine is a game fans have been waiting for since it was first revealed in 2021. A gameplay trailer was just shown during a September 2025 State of Play event. The game seems to blend the intense, up-close fighting of God of War with the compelling story of a Marvel hero, and it also features the exciting, cinematic action sequences that Uncharted is known for.
The newest trailer features moments of intense action, like Wolverine slashing an enemy with his claws and severing an arm – actions that are similar to the brutal combat style of Kratos. Many fans are eagerly awaiting the Fall 2026 release, but for those wanting to know more, Insomniac Games has promised to reveal additional details in Spring 2026.
Ninja Gaiden 4
The Year Of The Ninja

- Planned Release Date: October 21, 2025
- Expected Platforms: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Fans had to wait a long time for new Ninja Gaiden games, but 2025 looks like a major year for the series. We’re getting Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remastered version, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, a brand new 2D title, and Ninja Gaiden 4 is expected to be the perfect finishing touch.
If you’re looking for intense and violent action, this game seems to offer a rewarding experience while maintaining the challenging difficulty the series is known for. It’s a team-up between Koei Tecmo and PlatinumGames – a studio famous for making quick and smooth action games – and it’s launching in October on many different platforms.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties
A Long-Awaited Remaster

- Planned Release Date: February 12, 2006
- Expected Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S
Yakuza fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. Players on the Nintendo Switch will receive updated versions of Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 in November, with other platforms getting them in December. While these are older games that have been remastered, the biggest news is about Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, which appears to be adding significantly more content.
The first game came out in North America in 2010, and this updated version will be available on many platforms in February 2026. Kazuma Kiryu, the main character of the series, is known for solving problems with his fighting skills – and anything else he can find. The intense combat is always fun, and the games combine a serious, compelling story with surprisingly funny side missions.
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered
Oh Musou, You’re So Fine, You Blow My Mind

- Planned Release Date: March 19, 2026
- Expected Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered is an updated version of a game originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. It’s a bit unusual that Koei Tecmo and Omega Force chose to skip updating the second game for the 25th anniversary celebration, and instead released this one on consoles in March 2026.
Players familiar with Musou games understand they’re packed with constant action and take place across diverse stages. While it might not offer the intense gore or detailed exploration that God of War fans crave, you can expect plenty of fast-paced combat and a large roster of playable characters. A rivalry between Lu Bu and Kratos would undoubtedly lead to some epic, visually stunning battles.
Onimusha: Way Of The Sword
A Mighty Return

- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Expected Platforms: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
It’s been quite a while since a new Onimusha game came out – the last one was back in 2006 on the PS2. So, fans are really eager to play Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which Capcom has been advertising a lot. The game seems to blend elements from the classic Onimusha titles – which had a survival horror feel – with the challenging difficulty and combat style of games like the Souls series.
Regardless, the creatures are frighteningly ugly, and the combat is intensely violent-precisely what you’d expect from an Onimusha title after such a long break. The samurai game world could really use more scary games similar to Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Nioh 3
Destroy The Feudal Lords

- Planned Release Date: February 6, 2026
- Expected Platforms: PC and PS5
Nioh 3 is the next installment in the samurai action series, and it’s clearly inspired by the challenging gameplay of the Souls games. A beta version was released shortly after the game was announced in June 2025, and players who tried it generally liked what they played.
Players have the ability to customize how their character looks and can explore larger, more open environments than in previous games, choosing to play solo or with friends. The fighting feels quick, impactful, and challenging – but battling corrupted versions of historical icons and terrifying demons shouldn’t be a walk in the park. Just ask Kratos. Learn more about the game’s features!
Lords Of The Fallen 2
Challenge The Gods

- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Expected Platforms: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Lords of the Fallen 2 is currently shrouded in mystery, with only a cinematic trailer revealed so far. However, the series does have two earlier titles, and those games feature combat that fits into the Soulslike category. What sets them apart is how substantial and impactful the combat feels – players can really feel the weight of each weapon they wield.
Lords of the Fallen 2 promises intense action, challenging players to defeat powerful, god-like creatures in large, interconnected areas. It’s a style of gameplay that Kratos would likely appreciate.
