Former Rockstar Dev Thinks GTA 6 Might Disappoint People

As a huge fan of Grand Theft Auto and someone who has followed Obbe Vermeij’s blog posts and interviews with great interest, I must admit that his recent prediction about Grand Theft Auto 6 leaves me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Obbe Vermeij is well-known in the Grand Theft Auto community for his past experiences at Rockstar Games. Last year, he started a blog sharing some intriguing stories about his involvement in creating games like GTA 3, San Andreas, and GTA IV. His revealing posts attracted Rockstar’s attention, leading to an email warning him to cease and desist, effectively ending further disclosures.

Currently, a developer held a one-hour conversation with SanInPlay about Grand Theft Auto 6 in great detail. However, his forecasts don’t align with certain fan expectations.

‘Going To Be The Best Game Out There’

In December, Grand Theft Auto 6 was unveiled by Rockstar Games following much anticipation from gaming enthusiasts across the globe. The unveiling of the trailer shattered previous viewership records and became a global sensation, reaching the pinnacle of news feeds everywhere – truly an amazing sight, and the trailer has raised high expectations for what’s to come in 2025 (fingers crossed).

After 14 years of dedicated work on the Grand Theft Auto series, Obbe Vermeij remains deeply connected to this game world. Although he has clarified that he has no insider knowledge about the development of GTA 6, his extensive experience sets him apart as a knowledgeable figure in this field.

In the interview with SanInPlay (which was dug up by GamesRadar), Vermeij made a bold prediction:

Based on my extensive experience playing open-world action games, I believe that Red Dead Redemption 2, while offering some new and exciting features, may not be drastically different from the beloved Grand Theft Auto V upon first release. As someone who has spent countless hours exploring virtual worlds and engaging in immersive storylines, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment when a highly anticipated game fails to live up to lofty expectations right out of the gate. However, it’s important to remember that even if Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t initially exceed GTA V in every way, it still has the potential to be an exceptional game and the best in its class. After all, it’s the depth and richness of the experience that truly matters in the long run.

In simpler terms, the trailer presented an authentic and vibrant game environment filled with current technology and cultural references. It hinted at a larger Grand Theft Auto map than before, based on approximations. We’re anticipating a two-pronged protagonist setup for an engaging coming-of-age narrative that could be both romantic and tragic. Additionally, the trailer promised the characteristic witty and satirical humor typical of the GTA franchise.

With that being said, how much can it really differ from Grand Theft Auto 5 in how it plays?
