So, right after Microsoft announced the changes and price increases for Xbox Game Pass, everyone and their mom tried to cancel their subscriptions. It was *crazy*! The cancellation page totally overloaded and started giving me errors – it just couldn’t handle all the requests. I mean, Xbox Game Pass has been awesome, letting us play a ton of games, even new ones on day one, without buying them individually. But this latest price hike and the other changes? People are *not* happy, and it actually broke the cancellation system. Seriously, it crashed from all the people trying to get out!
As a gamer who loves Xbox Game Pass, I’ve always thought the different tiers offered a ton of games for a pretty fair price – especially with the new games added every month and those exclusive titles. But, honestly, Microsoft just raised the price *again* for all the tiers, and a lot of us fans are really not thrilled about paying more.
New Xbox Game Pass Subscription Tiers
- Essential Plan ($9.99/month)
- Premium Plan ($14.99/month)
- Ultimate Plan ($29.99/month)
As announced in an official update on Xbox Wire, the Xbox Game Pass Core and Standard plans are being renamed to Essential and Premium, respectively, and will keep their current prices. However, the Ultimate plan will see a price increase of 50%, rising from $19.99 to $29.99 per month. The Microsoft PC Game Pass subscription is also becoming more expensive, increasing from $11.99 to $16.49 monthly. Current subscribers to the Core and Standard plans will be automatically moved to the new Essential and Premium tiers. Ultimate members will not have any changes to their benefits, other than the new monthly price. The Essential plan provides access to over 50 games each month, while Premium subscribers can choose from more than 200 games. Ultimate plan members will enjoy a catalog of 400+ titles, as well as over 75 games released on day one each year.
People have quickly figured out the new yearly cost of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which is now $360. Although the service offers a huge selection of games and new releases on day one, many think most subscribers don’t have enough time to play enough games to make the significant expense worthwhile. Some have also suggested that buying games individually might actually be more affordable than the updated yearly price of the Ultimate plan. It’s unclear if the recent wave of subscription cancellations by Xbox Game Pass users will influence future pricing, but many are worried about potential future price increases, though this is just speculation.

For several years, the increasing price of video games has been a major concern for gamers. The expected cost of new games, like the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 titles and large releases such as Grand Theft Auto 6, has many people worried about whether gaming will remain affordable and available to everyone. Fans who are curious can keep an eye on any news regarding Xbox Game Pass prices and other adjustments to video game subscription services.
